I don't think anyone labelled your daughter as a thief ! He/she just suggested that you speak to your daughter to find out the facts and then you would know if she had stolen something or if she had been wrongly accused of wrongdoing. I didn't read anything sinister into that suggestion.ELITE 5:2

Interfering with mail - Postal Services Act 2000 Section 84
Triable Summarily (Magistrates court)
6 Months and or a fine (Max)
A person commits an offence if they without reasonable excuse intentionally delay or open a postal packet in the course of transmission by post or intentionally opens a mail bag.
A person commits an offence if, intending to act to a person's detriment and without reasonable excuse, opens a postal packet which they know or suspect to have been delivered incorrectly.
If you work for the Post service you could commit other offences under Section 83 triable either way (Magistrates or Crown court) and get a sentence of 2 years and or a fine.
Someone in your care is excuse enough in law.
If I was her daughter I wouldnt want my parents opening my letters. I would be old enough to open them myself at 14 regardless of if by law they could do.
Im 25 now and they open my letters if I say to do so and has worked this way since I was old enough to actually send a letter. erm from the age of about 12 ish I would say0 -

In this case it's a good job her mum did. Remember her daughter is classed as vunerable. When I was 14 it was Mum and dad's house their rules. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

I do wish people on MSE would stop spouting this nonsense about it being illegal to open mail.
I haven't a clue as to the legal imlications of opening mail BUT I do think that even 14 year olds are entitled to a certain amount of privacy to open their own mail (although I wouldn't expect them to be too secretive about this) unless the parents have a concrete reason for being very suspicious of what their child is up to ! Its a bit of a bummer if anyone really feels the need to open post before their child of 14 even sees it - its one thing to ask to look afterwards but a bit insulting to the child to open it first.ELITE 5:2

Maybe so - but a bit of respect for a 14 year old might well be a positive way to teach her respect for other people. If we don't show respect ourselves then how can we complain if our children don't either ?ELITE 5:2
