Not a day goes by without someone complaining about postage costs. The OP says "I am always aware of postage costs, and how some sellers are making alot of money by charging extortionate prices for their postage." If you are always aware of it, then why did you bid on the item? I dont think anyone should complain about postage costs, as they know what they are paying before they bid. I think the stars for postage should only be marked down if incorrect method has been used. For example, if they are charging £9 tand state Special Delivery, you expect that. If they then decide to send it cheapest method possible and poorly packed you should mark them down on postage stars. What next? People will be haggling over price saying that they only bid that much because others bidders forced the price up!

Excessive postage threads are the new "who leave feedback first" threads.

  • When you made purchase you shoud have considered the total cost include pp, I bought a memory stick while ago, the sale price was cheap but the pp is hight, the total i paid is still chap alrough the actrual pp is 7 pounds less. the seller did have a not in the post said Ebay and papal charged too much, i can understand it , if you are a seller the total Ebay and paypal will take total of 20 % of your gross income.

Lets say if the item is list £ 10 , £ 2 go to ebay and paypal. How much profit
can the seller make? I dont know, i am not standing on the seller's side, but you shoud consider the total cost and you can always leave rates on sellers feed back. and the seller should charge reasonable higher pp too. otherwise dont buy it

  • concider your purchase first , have a good looksee locally to find out if you need to use ebay to locate an item , half the time you will find what your after at better than ebay prices buy simply looking around your local shops

    then

must have item ? concider that postage , should a seller be getting paid to package an item ? should you as a buyer be paying a premium for this ? its a circular argument in that some hastle needs to be undertaken by any seller and driving to the post office etc is part and parcel of selling on ebay and to list an item is voluntary , the seller after all gets tax free funds ( depends of course but most are ) and is in effect receiving extra moneys by not having to give some profit to the tax man and thus is already being paid for the trouble of packaging anyway

personally if i consider an items postage to high i email and ask if its ok to use my own courier , i explain the parcel will be collected and all they need to do is be there to hand it over , total postal costs normally come in at £6.50 using a courier sourced from ebay , if this isnt possible i simply dont buy from them

Ok, so actual postage cost is likely to be £5. Well the dress won't package itself (and no doubt you will complain if it is not well packed), or drive itself to the post office (pay to park?). £4 for packaging, fuel, time, etc does not seem unreasonable for such an item.

Now the point that I really want to turn my caps lock key on... purchase price + postage = total cost. If you don't like the total cost, don't bid.

but I am also aware that ebay are trying to crack down on excessive postage charges, taking the eg of cds/dvds charges

Aww bless - you think that the "free postage" on DVD's and CD's is for the benefit of the customers?! It's not "free", it's inclusive - if you paid 99p and £2P&P for a DVD 6 months ago, that same DVD is now £2.99, maybe even £3.49 with "free" postage.

The true reason for this change was to increase the final value fee revenue for eBay, whilst making their GMV look better in the financial results.

I signed up for Amazon Prime, so 1st class or courier delivery is free (and for up to five nominated family members). Certainly makes Amazon purchases more attractive than the silly P&P on Ebay and waiting on the auction to complete.

The difference being is that the majority of goods sold on Amazon are supplied by Amazon, and a minority via marketplace.

eBay sell nothing except advertising space - there are no eBay supplied products that are discounted or subsidised by themselves.

why not charge the winner for say the elec used for that week as you need it to check out whos won , then thers the gas bill because you dont want to do it cold now do you and hows about say £20 toward the running cost of the car , lets call it all in £200 per item , that sounds fair doesnt it

i charge what it costs , if they pay too much i refund the difference , i offer the use of a courier to keep costs down , packaging is near nothing as i simply recycle box`s from the local co-op , bit of tape once again near nothing , the difference is when i sell something it goes out for a respectable price only , im not interested in profiteering , no fuel costs or parking as i simply cycle there , i have 100% across the board for a bloody good reason , i treat people how i would expect to be treated , when i sell something im disposing thats all , it may have a residual value hence i use ebay but at no point do i expect to make myself rich off the back of others , id prefer to give stuff away rather than exploit , the time it takes to package and transport is my own problem , no-one forced me to sell an item and at no point should i expect payment or invoice anyone for my own free time , this is real basic stuff , its called common decency and looking after others , it costs nothing to the individual and yet you require reward !!!! amazing , and i wonder why i hardly ever come here

feel free to use the caps key , ill still sleep easly tonight

Well thats all fine if you are doing it out of the goodness of your heart, but businesses do actually have to cover their costs and most individuals would also wish to cover their out of pocket expenses. You will note that the term is "postage and packing" not "postage".

From a personal point of view, I don't condone excessive postage. I would never buy from a seller that was taking the micky on postage and as a seller I charge as realsitic postage as possible (I guess that is the bloody good reason that I too have 100% across the board).

What I simply can not get my head around is why somebody bids when they know what the postage charge is and then complains about it.

If the item turns up baddly packed or not via the service that was stated, then that is another matter.

Sellers that do charge excessive postage need to know that (1) if the item is lost, then RM will only refund the actual postage cost (2) these posts do show that buyers dont like to pay over the odds, and their feedback is likely to reflect this.

Finally, if you can't bear to read an opinion that differs from your own, then perhaps you are right not to come here too often.
