  • What I cannot understand from the OP is that if they are checking in one bag, why not take 2 cabin bags instead of 10kg each and avoid the charges?

As a regular Ryanair flyer, I am somewhat at a loss with their inention to charge for online check-in. If they do this I fail to see how the flights will be available at their headline price, which then becomes illegal.

At present all the charges are optional. We are off to Alicante tomorrow and our flights are £5 each, each way. We take cabin baggage, check in online and pay by Electron card, so we pay the headline price. But from 1st May this seems not to be possible.

They aren't charging on promotional fares - so I suspect (as other people have noted) that there'll be a dramatic increase in promotional fares available.

Maybe you can clear this up for me since you are a regular Rayaniar user.

I cannot simply take hand luggage as my girlfriend packs far too much stuff,, hair things millions of shoes, 3 outfits for different times of the day and stuff (I know its crazy but i cant ask her to take simply hand luggage- she just wouldnt go, and this is for her bday aswell)

When you travel have you ever opted for:

you and your partner both online check in- one of you checking in baggage?

This is what I want to do as it works out at £30.

Whereas both of us checking in at the airport and one bag costs £60.

Double the price, therefore you can imagine i want to get this right!!

crs123 just be careful because in the 'olden days' Ryanair would let you 'pool' your checked baggage allowance, so two of us would take one bigger case and have both our cabin bag weight allowances shared on that case. But now they are v strict and each person can only take his/her own allowance in separate cases. If your case is overweight (check on the website what it is as it changes) they will let you take it but at an exorbitant excess baggage charge - so if she could take one fewer pair of shoes it might be better ! I used to be a very heavy luggage lady but have had to slim my baggage down to a very minimum.
People sometimes find it hard to check in online for the return trip if they're staying somewhere where there's no computer and no access to one. We go to a very rural part of France where online checkin almost impossible, so tho they don't catch us on the outbound flight, they do on the inbound....

yes you can both checkin online and only one of you take a bag....

You can do online check in up to 15 days before your flight now so the OP's weekend away won't be affected by this.
  • crs123,

If you wish to reduce your costs then you have to gamble on booking your flights seperate, which in my opinion is only a small gamble.

If you book your flight together and wish to check in one hold baggage, you must check in at the airport together and so pay the check in charges for 2 bookings.

However if you book both flights seperate and hopefully keep the same price (which should happen or very near) then you check in your flight online (free) and check in the other booking at check in.

Although there is a 10k allowance for hand luggage the main point here is the dimension of the hand luggage fitting the criteria. You do not go to check in desks if checked in online and so the bag can actually weigh alot as long as you are capable of putting the bag into the overhead locker. This explains why on all budget flights now the overhead lockers are crammed full with small suitcases! A way to have your hand luggae near your seat is to pay for "priority boarding" but do this at the airport as the last time I checked it was cheaper than online! But is it really worth it?

The very best of luck with your booking and have a great time.

Then tell her to stop being a little madam and wise up to the realities of life.

Incidentally, with Beauvais airport, you'll be looking at a transfer time of 2 hours from Paris. Ryanair check in closes *strictly* 40 minutes before the flight, with absolutely no exceptions. Therefore, you'll want to leave Paris at least 3h30 before your flight, and perhaps 4h just to be safe. In this respect, are you sure you want to bother with a 10:50pm flight out of Beauvais? Leaving Paris at any time before 7:30pm in the evening will be a nightmare with traffic - so you should consider this very carefully.

Alternatively fly queasyjet who allow you to book flights together, but with one airport check in for madam and on-line check-in for you - you can drop her at the departures gate while you park the car, you know it makes sense love!! ;)

As it's first come first served for boarding, so as long as you get somewhere halfway in the queue together, you'll be able to sit together.

Unless you don't want to of course?!
4kWp, SSE, SolarEdge P300 optimisers & SE3500 Inverter, in occasionally sunny Corby, Northants.
Now with added Sunsynk 5kw hybrid ecco inverter & 15kWh Fogstar batteries. Oh Octopus Energy too.

I don't think it's up to us to judge what makes other people's holiday. If she wants to take luggage then that is her choice and right to do as she wants in a free society.

    Thanks for the replys!!

Ive taken everything on board- :D

I didnt realise with online check in and just carrying hand luggage we could take 20 kg between us. Maybe a bit more if they aint checking!!

That is making me think we could maybe just get away with online check in.

Ive also taken on board the comments about leaving Paris at that time of night, didnt really consider that scenario tbh.

Im keen to get the flight from Beauvaus to Glasgow that night though,, £23 in total is not too bad atall. Im wondering if it would be possible to make a day out of travelling from Paris to the airport if theres any tourist attractions on the way, ie (make a day out of it whilst kinda travelling to the airport).

    Thanks again people.
  • Hi CRS,

Just a quick word of warning, I'm assuming you're flying from Glasgow Prestwick to Beauvais. If so, Ryanair have started weighing every item of hand lugggage before you go through passport control and, if it is over 10kgs, they will make you check it in (and pay a fee to do so).

They seem to have recently introduced this (my flight was late Feb), and it was catching a lot of people out.
