I see. The only thing I have with that is that I get the same problems in firefox too which doesn't have any sort of mcafee script proxy add on.

That, and coupled with the fact that it manifests itself in safe mode (when there is nothing loaded, including firewalls/antivirus) is what is leading me to think it's something else, like core networking components that have gone up the swanny?

Is there a way to remove/reinstall them?

I will try taking out mcafee using the normal deinstallation method but i doubt if that's the problem. Seeing as it is fairly sporadic and doesn't affect every website - only some.

I'd be tempted to blame your university, you access the net via their proxy:

    ProxyServer = wwwcache.<MY UNIVERSITY>.ac.uk:81

Do you have to use their proxy (check their setup instructions)? can you call their IT dept and ask them for advice?

    I don't think i've explain this clearly enough. :o

This connection is at my private address, through ADSL 24 (not a uni supplied internet connection).

If I attempt to access the internet 'normally' with no proxy applied, I get the problems as in post #1, in that access is sporadic and some sites don't work at all, or just are iffy.
This is exhibited in both internet explorer (which has this setting) and firefox (which has no proxy settings whatsoever).

The proxy setting is there in my browser because some sites that the uni subscribe to don't work off campus without using the proxy - but it is disabled except for the times unless I want to specifically access one of those sites.

    HOWEVER ...

If I turn on the unversity's proxy (and browse away), all the sites seem to work away happily, and I can browse as normal, without any of the problems I have been experiencing.

    Hope this is clearer?

    Try using OpenDNS's DNS servers:

http://www.opendns.com/ instructions are on the site.

It maybe your ISP's DNS servers are useless, worth a shot.

I think the OP answered their own question in their original post. Not sure why people have asked for a HJT log etc and started asking the OP to remove things.

As said in the post quoted above you have your browser set to use the Uni proxy, you are now not on their LAN by the looks of your post so will not be going through their ISA Server. therefore your browser is unable to get to the WWW. You will need to remove the procy settings by unticking it and then ticking Auto Detect Proxy settings ( Firefox ) or automatically detect settings (IE) or go through a different proxy as your ISP's DNS maybe updating but strange that you cannot get on the most popular of sites

Tried that one, still having the same problems as before.

It's got to be something to do with this machine, as on my laptop, there's no such problems.
