When you pay a bill at the Post Office or pay for postage, do they require the Cheque Guarantee Card? Cheers.

If you are paying a bill, then it depends on what arrangements the PO have with the recipient of the bill - in general no, but there are exceptions. Your average PO counter clerk won't have a clue as to the exceptions.

If you are buying something from the PO then yes, the card is needed. There are some items for which they won't take cheques.

You don't need to guarantee the cheque if you are paying a bill or buying a tax disc, however we can't accept cheques for some companies such as Scottish Power.

For postage and just about everything else the cheque needs to be guaranteed.

But seriously, don't use cheques. As someone who accepts cheques every day, I despise them. They are so much more hassle than debit cards and leave the counter clerk open to losses if the cheque isn't filled in properly and they don't notice. I accepted a cheque made out to the wrong company the other day and my boss said the company that owns our PO's policy is that I'll have to pay the value if it gets sent back..... needless to say I'm thinking of just leaving, I don't want to be working with a company who continue to accept a ridiculously outdated payment method which puts their staff at risk :rotfl:

Seriously, leave now! Having worked for the post office for a good few years and being Manager at 3 branches I can tell you. It never stops, never gets any better. It is literally always the same and ALWAYS throughout your entire career this same ethos of if you lose any money, you are 100% responsible from your wages, which is kind of fair. But, people make mistakes.
I got sacked from one office over some missing dollars from the Bureau de change money as I refused to pay it back since I was certain it was nothing to do with me. I left and two weeks later they asked me to come back, lol. Presumably they finally found the Dollars, needless to say I told them to shove the job up their rear ends.

You no doubt have been shouted at/threatened or abused at some point when simply asking for id for a Giro or refusing Car tax down to no insurance/traders policy etc...
I once got told by a customer that he was coming back down later that day with his gun to shoot me. That was literally as I said, High value Giro, no id.
As I said, it never stops. You are constantly hated by EVERYBODY who walks in the shop, moaning about queues (although I was pretty damn fast and now get shocked at home slow some counter staff really are). You are a prime target for a violent robbery. If you mix up any money, if any fivers/tenners accidently stick together or even if you enter something wrong on the system and it goes unnoticed, you are liable to pay any shortages (Something you generally get with no other job and certainly not as frequent)

And all of this, you get at minimum wage or not far up from. Now I work in admin and have had 2 years of not having to worry. When I worked at the post office I was constantly worried and stressed out. Even to the point of being worried of being attacked on the way in/out with a customer that I may have annoyed by following procedures.

And don't you just love this one... "But they do it in xxx post office for me"
"I don't give a s**t sir, if they do it like that there then they do it wrong there, would you like to see my manual on Horizon?"

Do you still get fraud cheque stop notices on horizon literally nearly every single day and think the same I used to. WHY STILL CONTINUE TO OFFER THI SERVICE????
  • few shops do accept cheques and services such as bus passes or post office etc.
