Do any shops accept Cheques ?

Not all banks and building societies require a cheque for example Norwich and Peterborugh and Yorkshire Building Societies don't need one.
Also some like Birmingham Midshires require a direct debit and some don't. It depends on the organisation concerned.0 -
ING Direct only accepts cheques for initial deposits0

Obviously the Building Societies don't agree with your line of thought, clearly they could have implemented Direct Debit payments years ago, they havn't.
Wait, you mean they haven't switched over because they disagree with my thinking, and not because they're simply - as a business - trying to avoid expenditure?
Wow, I never realized I was so important!I suspect they like to see a piece of paper with an imprint of the new customers details on it, I am also fairly sure they will keep a photo copy of each cheque submitted.
Why would they want to see such a piece of paper? Please explain why this method would be more advantageous than a direct debit, which provides the exact same level of verification that the account exists. KYC requirements? No, can't be that, because cheques are stupidly easy to forge.
And you're fairly sure, are you? Do you know, or are you just clutching at straws?Anyway, I am fairly sure that the banks will impose upon their customers whatever suits the banks as usual.
You mean that businesses can decide how the services that they provide for free are used? :rolleyes:What would William Shatner do?0 -

You may or may not remember the law changing a few years ago which basically bought an end to the cashing of cheques and is responsible for about 99% of all cheques now being a/c payee crossed.
At the time, there was just as much outrage about "oh my god, how will we pay people now?! The world is at an end!"
Anyway, nobody is "stuffing" anybody's needs. Their needs will still be easily met by alternative payment methods or other new methods that we may see in the coming years. What would William Shatner do?0 -
getting back to the original topic does anyone know any shops that still take cheques, I beleive in Northern Ireland it maybe more common to accept them than on the mainland.0

The one I work in (part of Thresher group) still takes cheques.0

It is upto the individual business concerned if they accept cheques. They are perfectly entitled to accept payments by whichever means they decide.0

When you pay a bill at the Post Office or pay for postage, do they require the Cheque Guarantee Card? Cheers.0
