I'm just wondering if older female/younger male relationships have a much shorter shelf life than the other way round??

My OH is 38 and Im 28, so 10 years between us.

However, I do look younger than I am (Im always getting ID'd which is embarrassing!!!) and OH looks older than 38, so we get a lot of dirty looks when we're out together. Not so much if we're just walking along together, but if we're holding hands or something we get some really dirty looks!!!

My dad is 8 years older than my mum, so he didnt bat an eyelid when I started going out with OH, but mum interrogated me (she was convinced he was married and seeing me behind his wife's back because he was older - and then she interrogated me about why he had his own house and didnt still live at home with his parents!!!!!!!!!! - yes really)

However age gaps have always caused a scandal in my family - especially when my then 27-year-old brother married an 18-year-old girl - what made it worse is I was 17 at the time and my mum said to him something along the lines of 'you're old enough to know better, she's the same age as your sister for god's sake!!!' didnt bother me though - i got on ok with her!

My boyfriend is over 20 years older than me. It has never been a problem to me, I had a massive crush on him before we started going out together. He thought I was a nice friendly girl who would never be interested in someone his age. He's always been out with women fairly close his own age, yet this is the best relationship he's been in as we are just very compatable. He is very fit and energetic... and yes, very sexy. In lots of ways, I am the sensible, "grown up" one. We just work perfectly - maybe that's because it's still early days, not quite three years - and that's because of who we are, and not what age we are.
One of his female friends made a comment about noticing that I am lot younger, which I took quite personally at the time, but later that night we were watching an old film and arguing about the band who did one of the songs on there in the sixties and of course I was right!! (I like history..) I get on well with all of his friends and my friends always assume he is younger and love him because he treats me so well.

My Gran always said better be an old man's darling than a young man's slave...

Having said that, I am sure there are lots of older men who treat their girlfriends appallingly and I know several men with older girlfriends who treat them wonderfully, too. It's just a matter of finding the right person for us all.

I'm 27 and my husband to be (april 2009) is 38 (11 year gap). My parents kicked up about it (although they have a 7 year gap themselves!) and in fact my dad is still not happy, but my friends have been so supportive. They can see past the age difference and know that he makes me happy - which is what it's all about! He's young for his age so I don't really notice the difference (apart from when he tries to make me watch the professionals lol!). Also I'm quite petite so like Mrs_Ryan I also still get ID'd which can be embarrassing.

If you're happy then age shouldn't be an issue! Who cares what other people think? x
