I think the elderly who drive incredibly slowly, causing a lot of road rage and prompting people to make unsafe overtakes are just as bad as 20 year olds who drive too quickly... and lets not forget that todays speed limits were set using the braking distance of a ford anglia.

They don't cause " road rage " that is down to the impatience of the driver concerned, nor do they " prompt " people to make unsafe overtakes, that again is down to the driver concerned, it is they that should be banned.

I often get stuck behind slow moving tractors, I just wait until it is safe to pass.

most older people on the roads nowadays would have problems passing the current driving test...having said that, the fact that the test has gotten more stringent can only be seen as a good thing, I guess...

So would most not so old drivers.;)

The slow driving is the cause, impatience is mearly a reaction. Choosing to drive at an inappropriate speed whether it is too fast or too slow can have equally disasterous consequences.

I would not be arrogant enough myself to suggest anyone should be banned from driving, my driving is far from perfect. Retesting people would be a very good way of maintaining peoples skills and would allow less safer drivers of any age to 'retire' from driving making the roads safer for other road users.

    .

You are wrong, slow driving is not the " cause " of impatience, the impatience is down to the following driver and is an unnacceptable quality in a driver.

I do not get impatient when I am stuck behind a slow moving tractor, I just wait until it is safe to pass.

And bear in mind people of his age probably might not have taken a test either. Wife's grandad of similar age had his driving license handed out during the war.

So no, you can't compare to 20 year olds who have taken proper training.

I completely agree its not a good quality in a driver however it does not occur with out reason, if there was no slow moving vechile in front there would be no impatience would there?

In my opinion, the real culprits in this are the DVLA and the Government. Why set the age to renew a driving licence at 70, and then not insist on either a full retest, to assess someones ability to continue driving, or a full medical, to make sure that they are fit to? After all, if all the posters on here explaining that all older drivers are better than younger ones are correct, then there will be no problem passing the test, and if someone isnt fit to drive a car after a Doctor says so, then would anyone want that person back on the road.

So they should either take away the 70 age limit, if they arent going to use it to enforce any kind of suitability checks, or (The better option, IMO) after 70, they should introduce mandatory retest every 3-5 years say, and make it necessary to pass a medical.

Also, while Im mentioning age, I should also point out that whilst I agree that alot (Not all, but alot) of young drivers are reckless/anti social/inconsiderate with their driving, it has also been proven that older drivers are more likely to speed, more likely not wear a seatbelt (Which personally doesnt bother me, as the culprit will only be hurting themselves with this action should they have an accident... but its illegal nonetheless), and (With over 40's) much more likely to drink/drive.

Nobody is perfect at driving. When I failed my motorbike test the first time I took it, my instructor (who had been following the examiner and I on the route), said that the examiner himself had committed 3 major faults, and 6 minor ones whilst observing me. We all do things wrong, even those who think that 40 years of driving experience make them the most amazing driver, so theres very little point in apportioning blame on any particular age group.

Unfortunately your instructor was not qualified to make that judgement.
