Please can anyone help me, My mums partner of 85 as had his 4Th bump in 12 mths could be even less than that, How he as got away with it this long i really don't know, We have all told him he is not safe on the road but will not listen, his licence is up for renewal in April and He will apply again. They do not ask for a medical, but if they do it as to be with his agreement which off course he will not do, he never claims on his insurance, he always pays cash for the repairs. What can i do to stop Him I am worried that he will kill or injure someone.

The only thing you can really do is tell your local Police, who may well try and prosecute him for not reporting a road traffic accident at the time, for which he might (Repeat MIGHT) have his licence revoked.

It may sound a little harsh, but I guess its that, or the thought that one day it wont be another car he hits but a child!!!

What exactly is it thats causing him to have all these accidents though. Is his eyesight bad, or is he just a bad dirver. If its his eyes, and therefore a medical problem, Im pretty sure the DVLA can demand a medical, and if he doesnt then they can revoke his licence.

    *edit
Just found this on the direct.gov website

Driving before your licence is returned

Once DVLA has received your valid application you can drive before you receive your licence as long as you:
    • have held a Great Britain or Northern Ireland licence issued since 1 January 1976 or another exchangeable licence
    • aren't disqualified from driving
    • haven't been refused a licence for medical reasons or for failing to comply with medical enquiries
    • wouldn't be refused a licence for medical reasons (if in doubt, check with your doctor)
    • keep to any special conditions which apply to the licence
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/DG_4022086

In which case, Id say that if there are any medical issues that he knows should exclude him from driving, then he shouldnt be IYSWIM. As I say though, Im sure if you phoned the DVLA and told them, they wouldnt just tell you theres nothing they can do.

He drives Jags and they are new ones, but he cant control them, I think that is the main problem but not sure. but i do know that the DVLA can ask for a medical but they can only do that with his permission:mad: I have thought about ringing his doctor and make him aware off it, I am just so scared for the safety of others.

Mum is not aware of this accident he as had on Monday as she is in hospital, and he as told other members of the family that it as gone in for a service, but my brother let it slip that he had pulled out in front of another car and the car hit him then drove off, Which i am finding a bit hard to believe:rolleyes:

I bet he's still safer than most twenty year-olds!
  • Contact the dvla and let them know he isnt safe, hopefully they wont renew his licence on medical grounds or force him to retake his test
  • maybe its just his eyesight?

    A trip to the opticians?

He does wear glasses but only for reading, but he does have problems with his tear ducts, I have hardly slept all night worrying about this. I kept think9ing about the advert about pulling out in front of a bike and both my son and daughter ride bikes as so do so many other peoples family. So i have rang his Doctor today who is aware of our concerns about this chap. The doctor is away till a week on monday but i have left him the details so that he will have them on his return. But have been asked to ring him also so thats what i will do, and in the mean time pray that he and everyone else is safe. Luckly the ambulance is fetching mum out of hosptial so she will not have to come back with him, We are hoping that his car will be back before Mum is home so she does not find out about this one as she is very worried her self about him.
    many thanks to you all

If at all possible, I would try to talk sense into him without involving the Dr. I think it puts the Dr in a difficult position - he is there to treat medical problems. If the Dr is put in a position where he has to tell the guy that he should not be driving, he could end up resenting it and avoiding the Dr when he needs medical treatment etc. At his age, a good relashionship with the Dr is probably more important than ever.

We went through something similar with my Grandad some years ago. Everyone made it clear that we were happy to take him anywhere etc but he would not give up driving even though he was terrible. We just perseveered for months until the message got through.

A Doctor is not allowed to discuss the medical condition of a patient with another individual, without their specific consent.

Yes Squidge60 we think he is doing that also,

We all have said that we will take him any where and all of us have all talked to him but he wont listen,( He still dyes his hair too:eek: )The doc has spoke to him before about his driving also and as all so told him that if need be he would take it further, Well We all think it is time. none off us want to be faced with with the family of the one he may of injured or even Killed. All so the chap could afford to take taxis to anywhere he needs to go.
I have not taken this decision lightly i can asure you.
