I use salt, rinse aid and finish tablets. I stack correctly.
I've come to the conclusion washing up is cheaper and less stress free.
    Does anyone agree?

We have excellent results from our Bosch slim dw. Its 7 years old now and we use salt, rinse aid and various types of Finish tablets bought in bulk when on offer.

First thing we had to do was set the rinse aid and salt dispense rates. Have you done this? Just get the local water hardness from the water board site and adjust the machine accordingly. This might help your glasses come out shiny.

A dishwasher engineer told me it is not a waste disposal unit so scrape plates into the bin and remove large amounts of grease from roasting tins etc and all will be well.

Apart that I just clean the filter every now and again.

Although the issue does not seem to affect our machine some dishwasher tablets should only be used on a high temperature wash, check the pack and don`t use the economy program if they need 50 degrees plus.

As others have said you might get better results using powder as it can disolve and get cleaning faster, it might work out a bit cheaper too.

If it's not cleaning, then check the filter.
I've used maybe a dozen good-quality dishwashers in various houses and they've all been excellent.
Some people abuse them: e.g. putting a cafetiere full of coffee grounds in a dishwasher is just stupid.

Yes, Zanussi - I probably have to rewash/put something back in about once every 15 uses or so. And I bung the whole lot in, unrinsed etc. And use bog standard finish tablets. And empty the filter about once a month.

    (Yes, I abuse my dishwasher)

Also have a Bosch ... no complaints, brilliant!

Worth having someone check yours out, I think.

We were given ours free by a friend when we bought the house. Its about 8 years old and apart from not matching (it was integrated) its perfect.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. We do everything right. Filter is cleaned out daily. Plates are rinsed etc.
We have a Hotpoint integrated model which came with the kitchen so probably not a good unit. I will need to persevere with it at the moment. It's half of the top tray that never cleans so we are just making do.
However I have learnt one thing. It's Bosch for our next purchase.

As well as the filter, have you taken off the actual spray arms and given them a good clean ? They should come off very easily and can often get clogged up.

We swapped to Fairy tablets once as they were on offer, and they left our stuff coming out dirty and greasy (even when adding additional rinse aid and salt!), changing back to the Finish tablets sorted it out though!

I have had an Indesit, Smeg then another Indesit and only problems have been things stopping the arms wizzing round, such as a knife poking through a hole in the cutlery basket.
If it is half of the top layer I think it sounds like the top arm is stuck and only doing one half.
  • last year i noticed my dishwasher wasn't cleaning the top rack very well, i clean the filter every week etc, then when i had a closer look a bit of sweetcorn was stuck on the arm that sprays out the water! thats sweetcorn for you!:D
    totally a tog!:D
