Father's Name on Birth Certificate

I am currently pregnant but the father of my baby does not want anything to do with her. I dont mind his name being on the birth certificate (as I wouldnt want my daughter to grow up with father unknown stated on a legal document when we know who her father is) but am more concerned that if anything happens to me, I would need to know if he would get automatic custody of a child he doesnt even want.

I have arranged for her to be looked after by my other daughter's godparents should I no longer be able to do so myself, but am not sure legally if a will or other legal document would out weigh his name being on the birth certificate.

And if I did go down the route of saying I didnt know who the father was to ensure she didnt end up with someone who has little interest in her, what implications would there be for her or me in the future.

Thanks

Looking far ahead into the future i think it may be useful to have as much information as possible on documents.
I've recently started to do a family tree. My grandads birth certificate has his mums name on, but no dad, WE know he was born in 1894 in a workhouse so are struggling to trace that side of the family.

I'm assuming you're not married to him, in which case if you want his name on the birth certificate you'll either both have to both go to the register office together, or he'll have to sign a statutory declaration for you to take. This may put him off from being named if he wants nothiong to do with her.

By putting him on the birth certificate he will gain parental responsibility.

Peachy price is correct. Both parents have to be present to have both parents names on the birth certificate, otherwise any body could put any bodys name on birth certificates. Does he want his name on there
    or not?

I know that in scotland the father has no rights over the child unless the mother signs something to say he has parental rights, its different in england, fathers have rights unless proven not to be the father. Im not sure what happens if the mother dies though.

My daughters biological father is not named on her birth certificate and thank the lord he isnt! He's had nothing to do with her for the last 8 yrs. If i wanted to take her out the country and he had PR i would need his permission, also if i wanted to change her name i would need his permission.

Its completely your and his decision, but make sure you think about both the pros and cons.

This is the problem for you - if he's on the birth certificate, he has parental rights and if anything happens to you, he will be in charge of what happens to her, even if you have left other instructions.
  • I've no idea, but would he have to pay CSA payments if he isn't named on the birth certifcate?

You can instruct the CSA against pretty much any bloke without him being on the birth certificate-its then up to him to dispute it and pay for a dna test.

Technically i could tell them my neighbour got my pregnant, even when he didnt-just to cause some hassle.Obviously one would not do that-but you could. Just to cause annoyance and make them contest it.
