cheapest way is for the person in Eire to have a UK mobile, then you'll pay normal uk rates to send text to them from here.
If you send a text to a foreign mobile it will normally cost 20p or more.

Let me know if you find something cheaper, but I'm using this method as of the last week:

I had bought an O2 PAYG sim card when in Ireland (you can get these on ebay too and they can be registered on your behalf). Cost €10 with €10 call credit.
I then recently registered it online at girlfriend's address in Ireland and I get a further 4 x €5 credit over 4 months.

I send all my text messages now via there webtext service which offers 250 free web-to-mobile text messages a month. As I'm always near a computer it has slashed my text costs and now she is off the 1 text a day rationing (20p each with T-Mobile). So the potential saving is up to £50.

On roaming the O2 costs 39c to send a txt message. Whilst in Ireland it costs 25c to send an internation SMS. For more info check out https://www.o2.ie

    Is there a cheaper method?

  • o2 payg 10p per text when you have a international caller bolt on (£4.99 one off cost) http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices/boltons/international

o2 contract 16p per text without its 12p with its.
  • Hi,
I know this is abit off the topic, but i have an o2 contract with 100 free texts. My friend is going on holiday to Hungary (Budapest) and i was wondering whether it will charge me anything to text or will it be included in my 100 free texts?
    Thanks

texts sent to a UK phone, yes; to a Hungarian one probably not.

edit - I'm assuming you mean you are sending to your friend, not lending them the phone ...

There is a slight problem. It has been shut down and you can't register or add anymore credit.
  • So if i text the uk phone whilst the phone is in hungary, it will be free (cos of my 100 free texts). Is this right?
(The text will be from a uk phone to a uk phone in hungary)

correct - I'm not sure about the texts your friend will send to you though - on my O2 contract it says that from abroad it uses the allowance at 4 for 1; others may charge 30 or 40p

If your friend intends quite a bit of use there, it could be a good idea to get a local SIM card and use either a calling card or callback service
