    Apostrophes aren't complicated.

Here's an idea shall we get back on to BODMAS again? lol

When I teach basic spreadsheet skills, I ask the students to tell me the answer to:
    1 + 2 x 3

Many are amazed to find the answer is not 9!

There is nothing that amuses me more than people misspelling 'grammar'.

My grammar is a lovely lady. She will be 100 next year!

I could go on and on about the importance of knowing your basic English, but maths is another matter!

    Is the answer 7? *Prays*

    Yes :T

    Next question...

    1 + 1 = 1

(My Dad got furious when I told him this is correct, but then he didn't do Boolean alegebra at school!)

    Hallelujah!

The next question has me stumped though... surely it's two! I'm waiting for you to prove me wrong, however! :rotfl:

It's just sloppy use of symbols.

    1 + 1 = 1

    is unambiguously expressed as

    1∨1 = 1

    1 OR 1 is 1.

    It's just bitwise logic

    e.g.,

    12 OR 6

    expressed in bits is

    1100 OR 0110

    so the answer is
1110 in binary, or 14 in decimal.

BTW, they don't even teach binary logic in Computer Science any more. They removed it from the A Level syllabus the year before I took it (which was in 1996).

Not really, just the use of a different set of symbols. The the symbol for union is often a "U" and intersection the inverse of this symbol.

Most keyboards and software (in the late 70's and early 80's) were incapable of entering and displaying these symbols and so the + and . were used instead.

Probably just part of the dumbing down of 'A' levels - I was taught it as part of my CSE in Computer Studies (that's below 'O' level). It is essential knowledge for anyone who is going to program in Assembler or Machine Code.

So, in summary, can we agree that both Lewis' and Lewis's are correct? I personally prefer the latter.

One thing that I keep hearing and reading is an extra 'have' or '-ve' that just shouldn't be there, as in:
If I had have known I'd have told you
    Just googled and found:
Tell you what, if I had have been in on any of the financial system Ponzi schemes I would have long since taken the $billion or so I’d looted and retired to my nice hacienda
    and:
'What would I be doing now if I had have called it a day?' Or, worse, 'What regrets would I be feeling?'
The have after the had is just wrong, but it crops up all the time.

It is, course, normally spelled 'had of' on websites.
