Whilst Google Street View seems OK, I attempted to try your idea using Google Earth, but can find nothing in the bottom left hand side, (or anywhere come to that), re "street view" or "layers" ! Have tried clicking on everything on the view, but nothing!

What am I missing?

OK, have found the "problem", need to click on the "show sidebar" button on the tool bar, will give it a go later.
