I see a few recommendations for Rose Elliot's books...can someone give me a link to the exact book?
I think I have one of hers called 'Vegetarian Supercook' and it has a good recipe for soya muffins but I don't recall it being specifically low carb

I first bought her diet book:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Vegetarian-Low-Carb-Diet-vegetarians/dp/074992649X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1363529250&sr=8-2

This explains the concept of low carbing and how to apply it as a vegetarian, plus has some daily meal planners to get you started, and various recipes.

As I liked that book so much, I then bought her cook book too:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Vegetarian-Low-Carb-Diet-Cookbook/dp/0749926988/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363529250&sr=8-1

This is more just a low carb recipe book, again very good. I've used lots of recipes from both books.

I also bought, on recommendation from here, Celia Brooks Brown's book, which is also excellent:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Low-Carb-Vegetarian-Celia-Brooks-Brown/dp/1862056765/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1363529358&sr=1-4

I'd say the Celia recipes are possibly slightly more interesting, as they have more ingredients - which conversely makes them less quick and easy to make than the Rose ones.

I probably use all 3 books pretty equally and have favourites in all of them :)

    thanks sheila!
does anyone have any tips for grinding linseeds/flax? they are so shiny they are bouncing off the cutter in the food processor, i tried bashing them with a rolling pin and then put them back in the machine but it still didn't work. I was trying to save money by grinding them myself instead of using ready ground but it seems i have undone myself and will have to pay out for a grinder!

I tried it once but it just didn't work so I buy the 225g bags from Aldi for, I think, £1.99. They have 3 varieties - plain linseed, linseed with gojiberries, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and with sesame, blueberries and raspberries.

A little goes a long way and 1 pack lasts me around 10 - 12 days.

Has everyone else gone on holiday as it is very quiet on here ;)
  • Hi randm, I use a handheld blender to do mine. I do about 1/2 a cupful a time and it takes maybe a minute or so. I stop and stir a couple of times too.

    Hi randm

I have a *ahem* Magic Bullet

    http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Bullet-MBR-1701-17-Piece-Express/dp/B001WAKFDY

Mine was nearly this one and about 40£ off ebay. I have never regretted the outlay as it really does most things in less than a minute :)

It does finely chop and grind about 12 teaspoons of flaxseed in under a minute.

Look at how much flax seeds cost. Look at how much ground flax costs  Assess how much you will use it. Do remember, freshly ground flax is fresh. Pre-ground flax can oxidate and go rancid - keep any ground flax in the fridge.

I did my maths and decided that in 4-6 months I'd have recouped my money :rotfl: Bought the wonderful thing and use it regularly for grinding, making smoothies, ice cocktails, it really can cope with ice.

Had it ~ 3 years now and it is wonderful. :j:rotfl::T

    Hello peeps!

Not been posting much but am keeping up.

The cats are amazing - Sheldon is now 3.5 months old. He worked out the cat door at the weekend. Been watching the Holly cat (best girl in the world) and used his info.

As I was washing up he launched himself - a la tigers at a circus - at the cat door. Never touched the sides. So there's me all suddy fumbling the door open. Sheldon went 'whoops' (shock and I'm in trouble look) and ran in past me.

So spent a few hours outside making sure he could get back in again. He can. He's innoculated but cannot be allowed out unsupervised. Still too small, no collar, no chip. He's 3.5 months old and 1.4kg. And incredibly beautifully marked. He's 1/4 Bengal. I understand Bengals can get really big.

Anyway, as you can tell - I've been busy. Still reading and being low carb miself. I'm only commenting when I feel I can add something useful.

Been mostly finding a small cat collar place and have decided on this one
    http://kittyboocollars.co.uk/item_96/Sooty-Paws-on-White-Collar.htm

As he is a baby and is mostly white. Also found a place which does 19mm cat tags engraved for £2.50 delivered.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pet-ID-Tag-Dog-Puppy-Chihuahua-Cat-Kitten-engraved-free-/260500618764?ssPageName=ADME%3AX%3AAAQ%3AGB%3A1123

So visiting the vet to get his opinion on when it's ok to throttle your kitten :o

Also by fortuitousness hit on a kitten harness won for 3.5£ incl del. Poor Sheldy aint gonna know what's hit him.

So, happy low carbing you wonderful people!

All my cats are low carbers and we enjoy fish regularly :) :rotfl:
