Mercy am now feeling guilty about not watering my house plants on Friday:o
I think I'll stick with buying the kefir as it doesn't have additives, it's pretty low carb, and the shop gets regular deliveries of stuff in refrigerated trucks direct from Poland. OH has cluttered the kitchen with demi-johns of grapes from our garden but they've never successfully made it as far as wine because he loses track. It's just easier for me to buy kefir, not very MSE of me I know.
Mercy I will attempt to find out whether it's live or not, which could be guesswork as my Polish is limited to pleaseTotal Greek yogurt is live according to their website and that just has a tinfoil hat - maybe refrigeration slows it down ??

Lol's about the houseplants - can't you hear them screaming? Me neither. I wait till the peace lily looks droopy then water the lot. Seems to work
I don't blame you for buying kefir, if you like it it's good. After what you said about the never wine you'd likely end up with some cheesey substance. :rotfl:
As for live - from what I can gather, 'pasteurised' is pasteryzowane in Polish. And 'Live' is żyć.Though whether that's 'live' or 'live' i don't know
Doncha just love the English language :rotfl:

Thanks Daska. Not hungry now, so it will have to be tomorrow! Just going to have a couple of GG crackers with butter and pate later.
Mercy - I've heard of kefir, but never tried it. May buy some from the Polish shop to try before investigating further.
Hope you are all enjoying the weekend. Been sunny but breezy here today so plenty of laundry dried.0 -

LOL, it really isn't as complicated as wine, it's as simple as put kefir grains in glass container, pour in milk, wait two days and pour into a second container, wait one day and drink when ready. Adjusting fermenting times to suit - apparently there are more benefits with longer fermentation but also a stronger taste.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Hi all,
sorry i havnt been back on my laptop and it seems i missed a few messages for myself with my phone
just to reply
avstar, you are so right ... when i am tired i just want that energy boost so i stuff anything carby down my throat ... and as i have done shifts for so long i know what works to keep me awake ( sugar and caffeine) hence the reason i am addicted to sugar ... the caffeine has gone i have not had any coffee since i was advised not to by the dr ... and i really really try not to eat sugar but when i get those cravings ... oh boy
i will maybe try painting my nails when the cravings hit me ... i enjoy doing my nails so that might help
thanks for the good luck with the job hunting i applied for one yesterday and have another application to fill in this weekend so fingers crossed i get something soon
i think i am getting enough protein and fat ... i am having 100g per day of protein and having fat at every meal ... the fat choices i am taking are between avacados, coconut oil, nuts, flax seed oil, olive oil and sunflower seeds etc
daska: the way my husband is eating just now tbh there s no treats .. everything he is eating is a treat ... tonight for dinner it is a chicken tikka main meal with naan bread followed by a cake ... last night it was chinese... i think tbh he will need to get on top of his eating sooner rather than later but he is currently getting his head around changing when we come home ... time will tell
he currently has two sugars in his tea and the mars bar ... i would say every day he must have three chocolate bars and he has white bread fruit sugar in his tea etc ... so it is alot of carby foods
he knows what damage the sugar is doing him and he knows how addictive etc it is but he feels just now he is trying to do his best with dealing with the alcohol cravings and not smoking etc so he doesnt feel his head is in the right place to deal with the sugar ... he also freely admits that he has replaced the alcohol addiction with a sugar one
sheila : i think i will copy some of the almond pancake recipes down etc so that when i am craving i can try this instead of going straight for sugar ( this will be if i am still craving after trying painting my nails etc) thanks for that idea also
minahauk: that sounds like quite an interesting book i may try and get a hold of it... weight is such a frustrating thing you can know you are doing everything right and yet it barely seems to shift ... one thing i find interesting about going to a personal trainer is he uses a machine to measure the fat /lean content of my body ... i lost 2.2kg of fat in the last 17 days and gained 1kg of muscle so my % of fat in my body has went down and the % of lean muscle has went up but my weight on the scales only changed by 1.2kg ... so i wouldve normally been disheartened at that but the fat i have lost 2.2kg of fat is good so i am happy ...
could it be something like that is happening for you ? if you are eating right then i think that might be more likely0 -

i keep trying milk kefir ( and have some currently in the fridge *sleeping * but i just cant take it ... although tbh i cant stand the taste of milk so i cant really expect to enjoy fermented milk i spose ...
but i am gonna try the water kefir ... will need to find out exactly how to do it0 -
Tried the cheap Kippers, boil in the bag and it was a pile of slime with the black skin mixed in. I've covered them in the fridge with the aim of making kipper pate, but don't know. I'll see tomorow.
This way of eating with high protein is incredibly expensive. Instead of a jacket potato, it's a salmon steak, cheap though that is, but still stretching me.
No wonder mums fill their trollies with bread, and to think I didn't used to understand why?0 -
I just don't see how it is more expensive, if you're making changes.
Examples.. instead of dried and fresh pastas, growing basil, tinned tomatoes, tomato paste, Parmesan, tinned ravioli and macaroni cheese I buy no dried or fresh pasta at all..Parmesan, tinned tomatoes, tomato paste, growing basil less often, tinned ravioli and macaroni cheese for OH when he wants them as a change from packed lunches.
Instead of Corn Flakes, Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Special K, Weetabix, Shredded Wheat, Scott's Porage Oats.. just Weetabix (summer) and porridge (winter) for OH.
Instead of Muller Lite and Total Greek yogurts, plus occasional Marron'suis and Jello instant chocolate pudding only buy Yeo Valley organic natural yogurt.
I won't bore you with it all but am buying less food overall though buying more fats, fish, cream and eggs.
D - as we didn't get to go shopping. OH nipped round Tesco Express and got Birds Eye Original beef burgers (no additives listed) which seem to have shrunk since I was a kid.
Padstow - my favourite kippers are Co-op ones or Young's. Which ones did you try ?0 -
We are spending more on food generally. Potatoes and bread are filling and cheap. We aren't saving by not buying cereals and pasta because we didn't buy them before.
BTW smoked mackerel is a good non-slimy alternative to kippers. It's not too expensive either. We eat a lot of it.0 -
Lidl sells whole smoked mackerel as well as smoked mackerel fillets and smoked trout fillets.
Personally I'm convinced that we're spending less.
We're eating more fish and therefore less meat. No ready meals. Buying less fruit, fewer cereals, no instant coffee, no diet Pepsi, fewer fruit juices, less bread, no cakes and sweets and biscuits only for OH when he wants them.
Bottom line though, even if it does pan out that we spend more, that's fine. In this household good food is more important than clothes, vacations, huge flatscreen TV, boat, whatever..0
