(((bossymoo))) xx sleep well
I'm sitting here with mug of Earl Grey listening to Muse and I guess it has made me feel a tad mellower... soo I was wondering whether low carbing has had effects on your life that you didn't expect, beyond weight loss/better blood sugar ?
For me, for example, I feel more confident and in control of my life. I think the self-discipline is good for me as well.0 -
I've learnt a lot about myself. That I used to eat and never felt hunger. That my body had forgotten what thirst was. That my life was planned around food. All things I don't want for my children. I no longer feel that I am destined to be bigger. I tried and failed at so many I thought it was just me. Now I know I can do it. More importantly, now I know I will do it...Bossymoo

I agree with you both. I now know that weight loss is achievable, that I can eat well and feel full without feeling bloated, that I have control over how and what I eat.
Having said that I made the cakes that murphydog999 suggested and stuffed 3 last night . 684 calories but only 13.8 carbs, thank goodnessTry them , they really taste like chocolate cake and are yummy.
I found a recipe for chocolate flax brownies back in February and gave it to someone and now I have lost it. I can now have some flax without feeling bloated so if anyone has it then could they let me know? I could substitute half almonds and I think that it would be ok but am still trying to work out how to sweeten cakes. Using Splenda but would prefer not to.
The last couple of days I have had a terrible craving for chocolate and on Friday polished off 70g of 70%. Nuts as well. Can't work out why except that I hadn't slept much and was tired. Iron levels are good so it isn't that but I must stop going back to old ways!.
Did anyone watch the programme about Jamie Oliver in the US last night? He took a very obese family, who existed on junk food, to the hospital and their son had tests for diabetes, age around 12. Didn't have it at the moment but Dr said he had signs that he would and told them the brutal truth of what that meant! Got them onto a healthy eating plan. Know it is his trademark and publicity but at least he cares about kids and is trying to educate parents.
Have a good day everyone and mazzers, schoolhouse, sunnyday - are you ok?0 -
Angelfeathers - If they have a child who's allergy to eggs is so severe that they have to ban eggs in packed lunches then they shouldn't be serving it as a lunch option. I think I'd write the the school expressing your concerns that the caterers appear to be unaware of the ban and questioning whether that meant the ban had been lifted (and cc the catering company). It should become obvious pretty quickly whether the egg ban is justified or not LOL.
As devildog points out, it is possible for allergies to be severe even without touching the trigger foods. I had a live in carer for some time and couldn't have celery in the house because she was so allergic to it. Even spending too long in the salad section of the supermarket could be enough to set it off. I have another carer whose son's peanut allergy is so severe that if she eats them and kisses him good night two days later it will cause him to start swelling up. So there can be good reasons for having a blanket ban - especially when there might be food swapping going on.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

There seems to have been an explosion in allergies in recent years as well as kids being diagnosed with Asperger's, autism and diabetes.
The way our food is grown/reared and processed surely has to be a big part of the problem ? I do thank tough food laws in the EU though because things are so much worse in the USA than here.
Soo pleased that other people are getting positive things out of low carbing too that's so cool
The sun is out
Emailed Dr Daniel Winer in Toronto yesterday about his research linking Type II diabetes to an autoimmune condition which might show that when people have insulin resistance there's some sort of autoimmune body response going on ie body destroying its' own cells. X fingers he replies.
Sheila54 !!!! I don't succumb to low carb baking cos I think it would encourage me to get into the habit of eating normal cakes too.0 -

You'll get plenty of information on here but it would be worth trying https://www.minimins.com/gi-diet-support-forum/ as well if you want more specific help.
Research at Sydney Uni started the GI move - learn more here - https://www.glycemicindex.com/

Hi muddlemess1.. I'm sure we'd all help where we can cos we're like that on here.
There is a fundamental difference between low GI and low carb however.
Yes you'll see some low carb bakers on this thread using things like flaxseed, soya flour and almond flour for example but you'll also find paleos who don't even eat dairy and won't touch artificial sweeteners.
We just don't eat the kind of products and foods that you can eat and it could become very confusing for lurkers, not to mention tempting to low carbers when you talk about lower GI basmati rice and wholewheat pasta that we don't eat at all.
Personally I have diabetes and tried low GI before low carb. Even eating small portions of low GI foods still pushed my blood sugar way too high and I didn't lose weight at all. I am not saying low GI is bad, it's certainly healthier than a *normal* diet. We're on this thread because low carb works for us though.
My suggestion would be that you start a Low Glycemic Index Diet Support thread in the Health & Beauty section - recently a Dukan Diet thread has been started.
I'd also suggest that you look on the University of Sydney's GI website (the university did the GI research) https://www.glycemicindex.com because I presume there must be links to a community, forum or support group there or they could point you in the right direction.
As I said, I'm sure we'd help if we could but lower GI carbs are still carbs and low carb generally means getting rid of them and cutting grams of carbs to a limit far far lower than the amount of carbs you would eat.
I'm not sure there's much we can help you with ultimately.
