nuttybabe I'm seeing my own doc Thursday and I'm going to ask him what he thinks of the cold baths.. I kinda think his eyebrows will shoot up beyond belief before he tells me it's psychosomatic..but we'll see. Hope you and bossymoo feel less bloated soon xx

Sheila54.. right fiasco about the bloods.. my surgery doesn't do blood tests, you have to go to local hospital. The system always was that you needed an appointment BUT if you have diabetes a nurse would do them for you, before the phlembotomists arrived so you could get it done early and go eat breakfast/take meds. Got there 0740 and receptionist and nurses told me they don't do that anymore. Since no-one told me I didn't know this and the earliest appointment they could offer was 0930 and I'd been fasting since 1900 last night.:mad:
I decided to go to my surgery and plead with the first person qualified to stick a needle in me, to do the bloods, before surgery started. So I'm asking receptionist this and my GP stepped out from behind the patient records storage.
Me " You'll do "
Doc " I don't do blood tests anymore "
Me " Then you need the practice"
Receptionist was smirking, my GP agreed, so we went to nurse's room. He's taking blood when nurse starts to walk into room. Doc looks up tells her: " it's OK I'm keeping Edwardia good". She backs out and as she's doing so I quip " Didn't you know Dr<name> is a vampire ?". She looked at us like we're mad. (probably):D
My GP is a great doctor though, I'm very lucky to have him and it was nice of him to do that for me ! :T
Oh and for breakfast I had double free range fried egg and 250g mushrooms cooked in ghee followed by a mug of hot Lactofree milk with cinnamon in. It's supposed to lower BG so I'm experimenting - tastes mmmmmm0 -
Can i ask why your using ghee as opposed to butter ?0

I have sinned greatly, fell off the wagon big time, ate LOADS of carby stuff and put on lots of weight. It cannot continue, so my backside is back in gear - this time for good. I can't keep doing this to myself. I really don't know why I do it, coz I don't even like the bl***y carbs and sugar!
I have had chicken and salad for lunch with two boiled eggs. Tea will be some broccoli with cheese sauce. Copious amounts of tea have been drunk. BB crackers with peanut butter if I need snacks.

elantan of course you may.. ghee is clarified butter so it's had the milk solids removed and won't burn. Vegetable ghee though is basically trans fats, not healthy at all !! I'm experimenting with fats and oils other than my usual Extra Virgin olive oil at the moment.
I bought Khanum pure butter ghee without ethyl butyrate from www.spicesofindia.co.uk
as it's the only place I've found online which does this. A company employee told me that the factory scrubs down, then makes ethyl butyrate-free batches just for them.
I tried beef dripping at the weekend. Good point about these solid fats is when they melt in the pan you realise you don't need much at all. Bad point is that they tend to spit more than olive oil.
To my surprise neither ghee or beef dripping taste anywhere near as strong as EV olive oil.
Coconut oil is not for me. I bought Parachute and it tastes burnt to me and very strong. Great body moisturiser though !0 -
HELP PLEASE Hi just found your thread when searching for cheap slimfast!! (I know, its not the way to go) I'm 61, over 15 stone and feel really unhealthy and lethargic and have to make some changes now. I eat junk food, I snack all day, I'm addicted to food at times.
I'm vegetarian (also no fish) so please are there any other veggies out there who manage on low carb? I don't enjoy cooking, I know myself and I won't be able to stick to something that needs lots of effort, Three days a week I work long hours, so want something easy when I get home. I do make a museli from oats, few bran flakes and chopped nuts amnd seeds and dried fruit.
I did get the Rose Elliott low carb book but it wasn't easy. I really need help please,as I feel so c**p, but I need something I can stay with long term forever. Thanks0 -

The debate goes on... low carb vs low fat? The answer to me in terms of fat loss is simple... just ask any fitness model which macronutrient they manipulate the most prior to photo shoots or competitions to get seriously lean... it's always carbs that are manipulated the most to get them single digit body fat lean.
But what about health factors too... outdated government nutrition says that dietary fat is "bad for you"... oh how they still like to live in the 80's.
To help get to the bottom of this debate, I wanted to show you another great article by one of the nutritionists out there that I really respect, Dr Jonny Bowden...
Study Results: Low Carb vs. Low Fat?

A study that Johns Hopkins researchers presented at a recent American Heart Association meeting showed the more belly fat you lose, the better your arteries can expand, which allows more blood to flow to your heart, brain, and other areas.
The six-month study divided 60 men and women into two groups that combined either a low-fat or low-carb diet with moderate exercise. Both groups ate the same number of calories.
Researchers used a blood flow test to evaluate participants’ vascular health. They measured how much blood reached their fingertips before, during, and after a blood pressure cuff restricted arterial flow.
Measuring blood flow to your fingertips, by the way, provides an indication about your overall vascular health.
The more belly fat these people lost, the more blood flowed to their fingertips, indicating better arterial function.
“Our study demonstrated that the amount of improvement in the vessels was directly linked to how much central, or belly fat, the individuals lost, regardless of which diet they were on,” said lead researcher and John Hopkins professor Kerry J. Stewart.
“This is important since there have been concerns that a low-carb diet, which means eating more fat, may have a harmful effect on cardiovascular health. These results showed no harmful effects from the low-carb diet.”
If you’ve seen firsthand how powerfully a low-carb diet helps burn fat and boost health, you’re thrilled with these kinds of studies. Finally, researchers admit a low-carb diet trumps low-fat diets for fat loss as well as vascular (and other) health measures.
Better late than never!
But the news gets even better: participants on a low-carb diet in this study lost an average of 10 pounds more than those on a low-fat diet.
“After six months, those who were on the low-carb diet lost an average of 28.9 pounds versus 18.7 pounds among those on the low-fat diet,” Kerry said.
If you follow these studies, you know researchers allow a wide margin for what they consider a low-carb diet. Some studies severely limit carb intake to Atkins Induction levels (20 grams or less). Others are a little more, shall we say, lenient.
This was one of the more lenient studies.
Researchers here restricted carbs to 30% of the low-carb group’s diet, coming from foods like bread, pasta, and fruit... which, as you know, isn’t exactly low carb.
I wonder what would have happened if researchers put these participants an even more restricted low-carb diet that focused on lean protein, good fats, leafy green vegetables, nuts and seeds, and berries.
In other words, the same kind of diet our Paleo ancestors thrived on, and the one I think we’re most adapted to today.
I’m betting that their fat loss and vascular health would have improved even more.
That’s what I find so impressive. Even though the low-carb group devoured up to 30% of their carbs as bread and pasta, they still lost an average of 10 more pounds than the low-fat group, which ate about double this amount of carbohydrates.
So, even reducing your carbs a little bit can provide health benefits and fat loss.
But why do it halfway? After all, eating a low-carb (say, around 50 grams a day), moderate-protein, higher-fat whole foods diet allows you to eat the most nutrient-rich, satisfying, fat-burning foods on the planet.0 -

We all believe that eating low carb is the way to go as we feel healthier and lose weight. There are several well informed people, including dietiticians, cooks etc who are part of this thread so ask any questions and I am sure that they will be answered. It is better to cook for yourself, if you can, but meals can be prepared in advance and frozen so that you don't have to cook all of the time

I posted a while ago about my daughter being advised to low carb to try to combat inflammation in her body(she's a dancer). Do you mind if I post a typical week of meals for you to advise about? Is it covering most of what a 15 year old needs? She did initially lose some weight, which concerned me, but this seems to have stopped now.
Day 1-B-2 rashers bacon,baked beans
L-1 Pitta bread, salami,hm coleslaw,salad(with avocado)
D-Spaghetti,with onion,tamato, garlic sauce, coleslaw and salad
Omega 3 oil
Day 2-B-Porridge with scant amount of sugar and cream
L-baked beans on toast(1 piece), hm coleslaw
D-sausage, bacon, b,beans,fried potato(in butter).
omega 3 oil
Day 3-B-Bacon & b.beans
L-Home made veg soup, 1 piece bread
D- BBQ chicken,sweet potato,brocolli,mashed swede
Omega 3 oil
Day 4-B-Ready brek, sugar
L-Chicken, hm coleslaw,mixed salad(with avocado)

Marrbett, it's certainly not what I'd call a low carb diet, but does seem to have a good variety of foods. Some baked beans can be quite high in sugar. What is the aim of the diet? Do I recall you think the carbs might be causing the joint inflammation?
Well I've had a good Dukan day today. Oatbran bread and Philly for breakfast, ham and bresaola for snack, meatballs for lunch, roast beef and cottage cheese for dinner, plus yogurt for pud. Have had lots of water which is my usual downfall and cups of tea. Have got some green tea chilling in the fridge which I'll try get through tonight...
Hopefully the scales will wiggle down a little tomorrow.

Hi Bossymoo, I agree its not low carb, its definitely lower carb than it used to be. She does need to cut down on baked beans, but really misses her bread and pasta, which is why it sneaks in in small quantities.
Her chiropractor suggested that this diet may help lessen the inflammation (she did tend to pig out on carbs) as well as omega 3 oil and possibly vit D.
