Probably the one biggest positive health change anyone can make is to cut out sugar, food containing sugar and artificial sweeteners but obviously that's pretty tough. Reducing carbs would be right up there too.

Apologies for any brain deadness just eaten a bowl of raspberries with double cream and clotted cream.. yes a formerly forbidden pleasuren

Edwardia has it spot on. I'm here later :rotfl: :D

I wouldn't recommend reading through the lot. :j Instead, start here, do a bit of research, and ask any questions you like. It is good for us all to get refreshers and to use the info we have to help others.

What I did initially was look at Dr Dahlqvists low carb recommendations. The link can be found on Page 1 of this forum. Also there is the link to the recipe list which will be useful as you get the idea of all this.

Edwardia is completely correct in that eliminating sugars is likely the best thing.

Do know that spuds, bread, rice, pastry, cakes all convert to sugar so nip em in the bud!

It's not all bad though, as Eddy says 'a bowl of raspberries with double cream and clotted cream' can make up for a lot :)

Ask Q's, check out Dr D and GI.

(now running for cover as I refered to Edwardia as Eddy and may have to dodge missiles :rotfl:)

Hope you like it here (said from bunker)

Thanks for the comp.. I freely admit Ididn't read all 10,000 either. it is rather a lot ... and i am sure no rambling at all either :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Mercy will be along later and she can point you to some early posts to read.. daska will have some good links and Sheila54 is a former nurse. There are also quite a few regulars on here and we're a pretty friendly bunch so ask any questions.

In the mean time you get homework :rotfl:www.youtube.com and look at any of Gary Taubes lectures entitled Why We Get Fat or Dr Robert Lustig's video The Skinny on Obesity. will deff check this out thanks

Fewer carbs rather than low carb.. have a look at www.glycemicindex.com which is the University of Sydney website for Dr Jennie Brand-Miller's work on measuring which foods make your blood glucose (BG) rise fastest.

So if you were to have the lowest GI white rice, eat it less often and eat a smaller portion that would be healthier but not as healthy as brown or cutting it out altogether. I tend to eat brown rice as i know it is more healthy, i have now bought myself a rice cooker and it takes all the hassel out of trying to figure out how long to cook for etc

Probably the one biggest positive health change anyone can make is to cut out sugar, food containing sugar and artificial sweeteners but obviously that's pretty tough. Reducing carbs would be right up there too. Thankfully i dont add sugar to anything ( that's not to say i dont do sugar) it sneaks it's way into so many foods ... it's cheap for food producers to use so they sneak it in where they can... as i work night shift i was using sugar and coffee to survive the nights so i can honestly say i am addicted to the stuff ( but never added it to my food ... i just went out and bought processed foods with high sugar content) i tried to get off of sugar and found i was eating tonnes of fruit ( which is also full of sugar)

i first learned about the dangers of artificial sweetners about 5/6 years ago and stopped using them straight away ...

Apologies for any brain deadness just eaten a bowl of raspberries with double cream and clotted cream.. yes a formerly forbidden pleasuren

i am grateful for any help tbh hope the raspberries and double cream were lovely

Do know that spuds, bread, rice, pastry, cakes all convert to sugar so nip em in the bud! Yep i knew this thankfully i have been slowly dealing with it ... i only eat wholemeal or wholemeal seeded home made bread now rarely eat spuds ( maybe 6 times a year) the rice i eat is brown so a bit better and a slower burning carb... pastry kinda like spuds i rarely eat them , cakes , i would honestly rather eat two starters than have a desert so i honestly dont eat many cakes

i do however have a sweet tooth .. wouldnt think twice about eating a £1 bag of haribo in one sitting or a yorkie bar or a tub of ben and jerry's cookie dough icecream or tablet ( home made ...delish) or cinnamon balls ... love em

    i think i may be doomed :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Merc I hope ya kevlar'd up there in the bunker  Actually I confess that I was Team Edward for like 5 minutes after the first Twilight movie but switched allegiance to Jackson Rathbone during Eclipse because I do like a Texan who can ride a horse..

The raspberries were lovely thank you elantan and Mercy. No dinner tho as I have to haul posterior 7am and get me to local hospital for a whole bunch of fasting blood tests... cholesterol, HbA1C, liver and thyroid function tests, folate, vitamins, lipids.. about 12 in all. A nurse once told me not to become a junkie because my veins are cr*p. Easily visible but hard to get up. After that ordeal, I have to get on a train and go pick up my new contact lenses :D

bossymoo hope you had a lovely holiday !!

Sheila54 you're being too modest.. yes things change, but low carbing is what people with diabetes were told to do from 1918 up to the advent of oral drugs and Ancel Keys. Chinese and Ayurveda medicines have been around for at least 5000 years so don't go thinking your knowledge isn't relevant as sure much of it will be.

elantan sounds like you've made some good changes already..

Welcome back bossymoo - hope that you all had a great holiday :) I am sure that the nurse will be ok as everyone has to relax a bit on holiday!

Mercy - your comments to Edwardia made me laugh out loud and now my family think I'm nuts :rotfl:

Had a really good low carb day with only 20g carbs.

Really fancy the clotted cream with raspberries Edwardia so hope that you enjoyed them :) I hope that they get your blood easily tomorrow and you don't have to wait too long! Just look forward to the lovely meal that you can have after.

Edwardia - I became Mercy cos i wanted some. If I was at all vampiric at the time I'd have been Lestatia :) Or maybe Claudia :) I like real vampires, not scandalised adolescents. Although, scandalised adolescents do have their place :):rotfl:

Can't quite believe I typed 'real vampires' :rotfl::D:rotfl::D:rotfl:

That'd be Klaus Kinski doing 'Nosferatu' under the direction of Werner Herzog, surely? ;) Definately the most beautiful screenplay.

SHEILA - I know that of which you speak. Luckily I have only cats listening at the chuckling I do, they formed their ideas about my sanity ages ago and I do not disappoint.

Happy night night all, sweet dreams to you!

(do hope mine are full of vampires :))

Nutty, I also feel really bloated.

Well, I have gained 4lb in the 2 weeks since I saw the nurse, including my weeks holiday, and she said that was good going.

So, today I'm starting a dukan attack. I've had my oatbran allowance for breakfast in the form of some DD bread I had frozen from last time I did a bake-up. Spread with grilled pepper philly. Very nice actually.

Have no food in except frozen carp that isn't diet friendly so will sneak out to Mr S although I am supposed to be working from home today. I've already done a washer load and hung to dry this morning yikes. Still Monday mornings are always a waiting game and all hell will be let loose this afternoon.

Am going to buy lots of eggs, some of the 97% sausages and some turkey bacon, and will make a nice breakfast omelette tonight, to take to work with me tomorrow.

Hope you all had nice weekends.

Our travelling home was a bit sketchy. First the bus from the hotel was late. My mum had told us the flight was at 21.10 but it was actually 22.00 so we were all thinking we'd miss the flight. It took 90min in the bus, which would have been about 20 in a taxi, so was after 8 when we arrived (thinking we only had an hour to go). Then my 3yo lost his hand luggage, with his bedtime ted and the baby's blankie in. We didn't notice until we were in the queue at the gate, and were told it was too late. My stepdad asked the lady in duty free (? why?) and she caled security but said they didn't have it. Just as the lady was checking our boarding cards, about to walk down the tunnel to the plane, the duty free lady comes sprinting across, with the bag in her hand! Couldn't believe it! Just in the nick of time!
