One of my gas hobs has gone out in the past so no i would not feel safe leavign the oven on whilst im out. Boilers are different. this is just my personal experience. At least in the SC you do not have to lift heavy things out of the oven and sometimes I have 'issues' lets say with the control of my left hand whilst carrying heavy items. I dont think a mobility issue has been mentioned regarding the SC before.
Has enyone invited Delia herself to respond;) LOL
She clearly does not have to worry about space at all!

No because if I did not have a SC i would not do a casserole or a roast on the hob. An oven offers indirect heat to the dish whereas a hob is direct hence you get more risk of sticking and burning. Any stew that only took 45 minutes to cook IMHO would not be worth eating;)
Oh so you're one of those people that only cooks one thing in the oven at a time. Right I get you now.

What? I never said that! I should have said 'stew, cake and bread' i spose, and added that i leave the oven door open when its all done so the residual heat comes into the room, or drying bay leaves in a tin.... ;)

Oooh err, scarey! Yes, I can appreciate that a hob flame could potentially go out if there's a draft; in an oven though, being enclosed, that potential is greatly reduced.

I think you're right, I don't recall "mobility" issues being mentioned, but then, to be honest, I thought the discussion was regarding Delia's comment on a SC not being an "essential" if space is at a premium? In the majority of British homes, kitchens are not reknowned for being spacious.

She would most likely stand by her comment re: space/essentials :D Afterall, she isn't only addressing her comments to MSE OS'ers, or those on benefits, or those with particular issues but to a broad spectrum of people. I believe she has published a book on frugal cooking though, if that is what people are specifically looking for.

The majority of things delia does make me 'tut tut tut'
I used to watch her for a laugh, and im sure someone did a costing of her recipes. She makes deserts that can cost a tenner to make if you use all the stuff she does. And then theres the Sainsbury's thing she did, and the football...
My fave Delia 'howler' is 'Press the parmesan into the parsnips' LOL :):):)

Delia is a legend and if there is another person in charge of a football club that is willing to show as much passion as Delia i would be very surprised!

Delia is the best, buy her books

Also if she says a slow cooker is worthless then she is right!!!

    Will

To use an oven efficiently no self respecting cook would only put one item to cook in the oven. All 3 shelves would be utilised and the foods/menu planned accordingly.

What do you do then if your oven only has ONE shelf and you can't get replacement ones, goodness knows you've tried, but you just can't??

My SC is invaluable as it means I can set the timer switch to come on after we have all left for work in the morning, tea is ready for us all coming home in the evening. I plan ahead and make as much as possible this way. Some mornings I leave for work at 5am so it's the only way I can have a hot meal ready for everyone. I wouldn't be without mine and if it wasn't for OS I would never have found out about the virtues of SC's :T
  • arkonite-babe: my oven only has 2 shelves and I desperately missed a third. However, when having a mooch around Aldi's (or was it Lidl ;o) one day I saw an expanding oven tray. It cost about £3.50 and I use it as my 3rd shelf. It's none stick so I usually put stuff straight on it. It's the size of a normal oven tray when compressed but does expand quite wide enough to fit a big oven :) They were one of their 'Thursday specials', but now you know they are out there - you may be able to keep a look out.

(BTW - it was lovely and none-stick all over until MIL decided to wash it at Xmas. She used a knife to remove the stuck on bits which were steeping. So, one end looks a bit like a zebra now )
