Is the UK more racist than other countries?

What colour are they ??
Well green mostly. They have a blue haze above them as the trees are eucalypts (gum trees) so there's a haze of eucalyptus oil hanging in the air on a hot day. It doesn't help when the bush fires come around.
The Blue Mountains I reckon is the equivalent in many ways of the orange groves of California in the mid-late 1960s, culturally. Very different economically but there are parallels.0 -
dandy-candy wrote: »With the economy troubles the usual threads about immigrants workers and refugees taking our jobs/bleeding the system dry etc have come up again; but I can't help thinking the UK seems incredibly racist - it doesn't even stop at so called "foreigners". There seems to be an ingrained bad feeling between not only the Scots/Welsh/English but even northerners and southerners!! I don't know if this happens abroad - does northern France slag off southern France?
When you see those "Daily Mail type" stories about "Immigrant turns up at airport with 6 kids and gets house/££££ benefits/free kidneys blah blah blah" well of course it grates but I would be horrified if I saw families left to starve in the gutter because they were "foreign". Why does our media always pick on the tiny percent who do leech when there are far more who don't? And why do we buy their papers and believe it all?
There was a story in the Mail (admittedly not about money but just an example of attitude) about an illegal immigrant possibly infecting 400+ women with HIV - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1085446/HIV-illegal-immigrant-infected-400-women.html
Yes it's a awful story but why is it necessary to mention his nationality? It isn't really relevant other than to inflame readers into thinking "If he hadn't been let in it wouldn't of happened", but the real issue is anyone with an STD should use condoms, as should anyone sleeping with a stranger. Do other countries newspapers run stories of this type?
Sorry for the rant but with all the current woes I think we need to focus on real issues instead of blaming the "outsiders"!
Intersting question.
I think in Britiain we are remarkably tolerant and one of the least racist countries in the world.
Unfortunately occasionally this is taken advantage of.

Yes sorry race isn't the right word on that example - not sure what is tbh - but it's that north/south divide thing (maybe more a 30+ thing)Dr_DiNg_DoNg wrote: »I think you are somewhat confused dandy-candy , in order for a person to be racist, the person at the other end of the derogatory comment would need to be of another race, I dont think a white indigenous northerner is a different race from a white indigenous southerner.0 -

Which shopping centre and at which hours? I think you're lying.
Some of the Asian, Middle East and African countries have this policy (well maybe not the countries, but certain businesses) following an influx of sub-continent labourers over the past 5 years.
Shocking and disgusting, but it is all too easy for us to forget that South Africa wasn't the last nation with inherently racist policies.0 -
We're not racist. Its just that a lot of people "don't like the darkies"*
*Who depending on where in the country they are is whichever bogey group is currently to blame for ALL that area's ills - Poles, Slavs, Romanian Gypsies, Somalians, Muslims etc etc0 -

I have never lived abroad so this is part of why I posted my thread as a question - I hoped people who had or are from abroad could let me know how we compare. It does seem from people's comments to be bad in plenty of other places - I just find it really disheartening when our country has lots going for it that people are still so intolerant of their fellow man.0 -

The issue is that these 'darkies' are often racist. But, as a country we are too scared of admitting that non-whites can be racist.
To quote and Indian lad I used to work with :-
"I'm not racist I just hate P A K I S"
This just about summed it up for me, he can never called a racist due to the colour of his skin, hence we (as a country) allowed him to hate.
For me, as long as people attempt to integrate and work hard I'm happy. Therefor, I'm probably racist in terms of the Guardian, but a loony lefty to the Mail readers.0 -

Course we can call him racist - its not a white's only phenomenom you know. Indians and Pakistanis mutually wishing each other dead is hardly a new phenomenon either.0 -

Well....I have! I provided then deleted a couple of anecdotals, but I could fill the forum with examples. We do obviously have rascism, firing in ALL directions in UK: and I'd be lying if I pretended it wasn't something also experienced here, including by us, but in someways the threads here etc are quite heartening. Even people like me, who would welcome sensible conversation on immigration (based on resources not race or similar) refuse to be pushed into racist leanings.
