  • Wow, thanks for the speedy replies.

I have vertical louvres that I bought from the market, they come down no problem, for machine washing. But the blinds my daughter has look like they've been professionally fitted, with fine chain running through the top and bottom of each louvre.

I use coffeandfags bath method too but my blind fitter recommended that you soak them in water no hotter than lukewarm as extra heat may cause creases (in cheaper blinds) that cannot be removed.
  • Does the chain clip onto slats that run through the bottom of the blinds. If so, they sound like mine and they're ok to dismantle. First pull the chain off the slats on both sides on the bottom and then renmove the slats. Then cliomb up and detach the top slats from the fixing - there's a knack to it - sort of raise them 90 degrees upwards. I have never got them all out without snapping a couple - but replacements can be bought from a blind shop for about 10p each. Then take the top slats out. Then I soak my (cream) blinds in bleach and water in the sink overnight and then machine wash them at 40C. I rehang them damp generally as it hangs the creases out - and then reverse the order above.

  • Thanks tm, that sound like the ones. Do you mean that you sometimes snap the blind or the fastener?? I just don't want to break them, because she doesn't have any curtains yet, for that window.

I've always washed mine in the machine in a pillow case (I used a white one with the cream blinds, think it'd be risky to use a coloured one) hang them still damp, well usually straight from the machine as I am impatient. I find all the creases just drop out when done this way.

I take all the fasteners and other things off first before washing them. Must take the top ones out after a first broke her washing machine by leaving one in.
One day I might be more organised...........

Drastic I know:confused: , but my kitchen blinds (OFF White in colour) were grubby with lots of water stains (as they are near the sink), I had tried cleaning them with water etc... but nothing shifted the stains. Was going to buy some new ones this week but thought I would try one last attempt at cleaning them (And saving money).

Soaked one stripe (just the bottom) in a bit of BLEACH (29p thin bleach from Wilkinsons) to see how it went and the result was great!!!! :j

So I took them down and soaked the lot in Bleach for 2 hours, result Blinds Look Brand New :j

So for the price of 2 bottle's of cheap bleach i have lovely clean, new looking blinds.

    :j :j :j

    Great result :T

I`m ready for new ones now but then again they have been in the washing machine on a quickwash 4 times now:D , they are a bit limp now that they`ve lost the stiffness and i was considering starching them but i do think i`ve had more than my moneys worth out of them. They`re about 8 years
    old :D
If it wasn`t for the monster cat they probably would have lasted longer, i really don`t fancy ironing all the strips again so i`ll be having more in a couple of months.

PS if anyhing is past it`s best i try bleach and usually get good results
Planning on starting the GC again soon :p
