A quick question, again, sorry, I have read th details on the 1st page but just want to double check something..

I get a job for a pub, they pay £20 towards the food and drink and £3 towards petrol, (My mileage will be 20 roundtrip) however no fee. For tax purposes have I made a loss, or is food & drink classed as a perk and therefor taxable anyway? Please be gentle with me I'm new to this. Thank you x

All depends on what you had to buy to complete the shop. If the £20 didn't cover what you had to buy and the £3 petrol doesn't cover the cost of the petrol used (i calc mine a 40p p/m) then yes you have made a loss. This is before you take into account pages printed etc...

Thank you, so the £20 towards the food/drink is not taxable??
Also can you carry over a loss from one job to offset a profit from another?

Note of caution. According to the Tax office if you keep the goods e.g. shopping etc then it is counted as taxable, payment in kind. For this senario I would count it as expenses because there is nothing to show at the end of the mystery shop and the job cannot be done without consuming the meal. That being said the assessment of customer service in a shop means you need to buy some good, but whoever said that the UK tax system is logical!
Also it seems to be genarally acceptable to make a loss on some jobs, being self employed we need to keep our clients sweet to ensure further jobs. HTH
Couldn't think of anything witty to say so just keeping the space until I can :(

Folks, is there a guide anywhere on here about tax returns for mystery shoppers? i.e how to complete them? what counts as income? what counts as expenses? Would be really helpful if there was :)
