Considering Panny TH-37PX80B, Panny TH-37PX8BA (any difference in picture quality between the two?) and Toshiba Regza 37XV555DB. The main use will be for Freeview and Free Sky veiwing and we'll probably buy an HD Freesat box at some point. No gaming, no PC use and probably very few DVDs.
Any others we should consider (£400-£600)? Any other advice?

As far as I recall ~ the pans are exactly the same architecture wise. As its mainly to be used for freeview and sky+ then id go for the Panasonics as their scalers are better:idea:0

I have a Panny and it is fantastic, the picture quality was far better than the Toshiba.0

contrast and other 'details' are better on the PX80 - but be aware they are now replaced with the PX10 range and may be hard to get hold of.
The PX10 will be slightly better but more expensive - I know that people have got the new one from John Lewis with the 5 yr guarantee for £599 (price match with Sound and Vision)

My 10 year old 28" widescreen CRT TV has great sound, a built on subwoofer, even wireless rear speakers. Can these flat screen ones provide decent sound? It's the one thing that's putting me off upgrading (I would also be after a 37").0

Hi, you should post this question at http://www.avforums.com they are a very helpful and knowledgeable bunch0 -
Thanks all. Since posting this, I've also been looking at the X10 (seen posts from people price matching at JL with S&V but I think they have to be within a certain radius and no S&V don't have shops up here unfortunately - £699 is more than I wanted to pay). I'm also thinking about the 32" LG plasma. £439 from Richer Sounds with a 5 year warranty seems a bargain (£399 without the extended warranty). There's love in this world for everyone. In the extended family we have a Sony, two Samsungs and a Toshiba, all middle-range TVs, and the sound on all of them is tinny compare to an old big TV, because the speakers are small to fit in the case. the "answer" is to invest in a small home theatre sound system to go with it.
Of the brands, the Sony changes channel the fastest and has the nicest EPG, the Samsungs (s-PVA) have excellent pictures ang no ghosting, but channel change is a little slow. The Toshiba 37XV5xxx is good too, but the EPG is also a little slow. The Samsungs and Toshiba look nicer than the Sony.0 -
the panny th37px80b is no longer being produced by panny and the x10 has now been released instead
if you find a px80 get it - it has a better contrast ratio that the px8 and has 3 hdmi sockets instead of 2 and a sd slot which the px8 has none0 -

I had considered that, but I'm inclining towards a plasma. But not definitely ...There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

I have just bought the Panasonic TX-37LZD80 (£638 on Amazon) , and am using it with Freeview (Humax PVR) and with a Sky box (free viewing, not HD) and the picture is really exceptional - much better than I expected ....the sound is very good too.
