TBH, I think I sounded a bit grumpy yesterday! I'm frustrated by the inactivity, when I should be grateful for having the ability to sit this one out. It's just an age thing. I think: 'I've only got another 20 years or so.....and it takes 40 to grow a decent tree!

Dave, DH and I were saying EXACTLY THIS at the weekend :D I wanna plant trees! I put in a few rows of broad beans and I've got weindow sill covered with seed trays, but it just doesn't cut the mustard, does it?:o:D

There is a useful theme in the OP's post though. For many people, this recession / depression is actually a good thing. There's a lot of people in safe and secure and well-paid jobs, with substantial cash savings (which will benefit from deflation, even if they don't appreciate too much through interest) and who don't own property in the UK.

It would be interesting to do a snapshot survey - do you feel richer or poorer now than 12 months ag? I know what my answer would be.

The recession isnt a disaster for everyone.

Well, I'm still lucky having my own garden, albeit 1/4 mile away. It gives a whole new meaning to' 'I'm just going down the garden.' ! On the bike it's 4 minutes (have to detour down a quiet road) Coming back, it's uphill & a good 10!

But its also the main reason I don't want to buy to move again, up and up, and up some ladder. I want to grow old with my trees as they grow up. I want to work with nature to create a landsacpe that is producive and gives joy to many.

I'm lucky in that I have the land for the horses I can dig ditches and do the 'grunt' work of land maintainance, and I garden here at my parents house. In fact, DH and I are putting two more raise beds for the potager at the weekend. I love making things grow I love everything about land, and I want to put my soul in the soil. I just don't get why I'm called 'greedy' on this board for wanting to do that and not buy a FTB house, when we are saving responsibly have both worked hard to get a big savings pot and DH is prepared to continue working hard to bring money in while we tease the land we eventually buy into starting to work with us.

When people yell all day on this board that people like me are stupid and greedy and then talk about the ladder I think of trees and realise its not so foolish a plan for us.

ETA: btw have planted a few trees last season for my parents. In all DH and I have put in half a hundred trees here, mixed species. But we had to get a man with a minidigger for some. Our horsechestnuts are looking really promising and the cherries have been really successful. We lost three caci over winter though. :( Trying to decidse whther to try again with them.

You're not sorry at all! :rotfl:

Reminds me, I planted a horse chestnut in my parents' garden back around 1978 & I've not been there for 30 years. Might go & have a look.

Gosh, ours have grown really well, and with the dangers facing horse chestnuts I've got..well...quite a few potted up that have sprouted from conkers from a big tree. Yours will be HUGE! (and older than me!)

No I really am, I see so many posts on different forums about people only being able to grow things in pots as they live in rented houses, allotments are in short supply, I don't like it.

At last - someone who believes me. During the last big housing recession - prices didn`t drop here, maybe just took a bit longer to sell.

I was just about to come to your defence, then you went and wrote this!

Prices fell everywhere. My ex father in law lived in one of the most exclusive locations in the UK yet places there dropped 40%.
Where I live according to that CH4 annual programme, is the 7th best in the UK, but it has not stopped prices falling 20%, and this in an area of almost full employment with faultless schools and so on.

Back to whether some live in a parallel universe, yes they do, although some people are genuinely busy. My decorator mate has seen no fall in business at all:confused:
