Have unlocked the phone (Nokia) and although never used on T mobile and has a virgin Virgin chip installed it displays with the T Moblie logo.

Is there another code (One of the 1-6 codes)that I need to input to get rid of this?

Ask Virgin CS about this. I'm not saying it will work, but the other day someone suggested I send a text to Orange to restore their logo, which did.

The problem is that Virgin’s mobile service uses the physical network infrastructure provided by T-Mobile. The network number for the network to use when in your home country is burnt into the SIM card. In your case, it’s the network number for T-Mobile. The names for each different network number are store by your handset, in its firmware (the computer code and data needed to run the handset). So, your handset is displaying the correct network name for the physical network it is communicating with.

It is possible for so-called virtual networks to override the physical-network name displayed by the handset, either by using an extension in the SIM card or over-the-air. Unfortunately, not all handsets support both of these. I have an old Nokia handset. This correctly changes the network name for a Onetel SIM, which runs over the physical Vodafone network, but fails to display the Virgin name when using a Virgin SIM. I also have a newer Nokia handset that gets it right for both SIMs.

  • Wot sort of handset do you have?

Could you use a Virgin Operator Logo instead of the standard display?

    Hi Thanks for the response.

    It's a 6310i.

  • In that case (Seeing as the 6310i supports operator logos), have a go at sending an Operator Logo to the handset, by bluetooth, text message or data cable.

You *might* be able to download one from the Virgin WAP pages, though that might be a call to their customer services to find out where it would be.

Spoke to them regarding the same thing a few months back - nothing can be done, because it uses T-Mobile infastructure. Your only other option if this really bothers you is to buy a new Logo to stick over the one currently programmed into it, but his can be costly.

Why buy something that can be done for free? Thought this was a Money Saving forum?

I won't thank you, even though you asked twice because your information is incorrect!

Mobile operators can use CSP to allow their SIM to control the firmware on the phone i.e. hide or disable various menus or functions that the operator doesn't want you to have access to etc.

CSP can also be used to enable various features like reading the network name from the SIM. e.g. if a handset was originally on O2 and then unlocked so that an Orange SIM can be used, not all of the Orange functionality will work i.e. Line 1, Line 2 switching, unless CSP is enabled on the handset.

Similarly, virtual networks need to override the physical-network name displayed by the handset i.e. Virgin running on the T-Mobile network with their name stored on the SIM.

Therefore a 6310i that was previously on O2 or Voda needs CSP enabled using something like logomanager and a data lead or IrDa to switch CSP, making it a fully CPHS compatible handset. Doing this would also allow the handset to read the correct voicemail number from the SIM for key 1.

I have just tried a Virgin SIM in a GSM stock Nokia (never locked to any network) but unfortunately the SIM has expired but I'm sure that it used to display VIRGIN correctly.

So basically it is possible depending on how much effort you want to put in to achieving it.

Or you could simply pay a couple of quid for a new one/blank one from one of the various companys that will text it to you. This would actually be cheaper than buying data cables etc.
But do you really find an incorrect operator logo that irksome?
