OS Daily Thread - Sunday 15th March

Options
Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Sunday 15th March. This is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly, but if not, it's not a problem.

Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Daily Threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good!

Morning OS friends!

Quite warm this morning which is nice. My cat managed to walk past a night light candle that I had just blown out and it tipped over and she now has a patch of red wax matted in her fur. Going to have to get the OH to hold her while I trim as much off as I can. Not looking forward to that, she hates being held and yowls like a banshee.

SnowyOwl - Woooohoooo congratulations honey!
Squiggles hon - Your life is exhausting right now! I remember when I was finishing my Masters, I don't think I slept in about three months.
Candygirl - Hope your DD will soon be feeling better
Loopylinz - Sorry you are feeling so rough, but glad they are on top of it now.
Kati - Glad to hear your OH took care of you, and that you have now seen someone and they know what is going on. Just sit and relax for a few days if you can.
csarina - good luck with it all and it's very sensible to cover your back.

Didn't get any baking done, I had forgotten that my OH was working all day yesterday, as well as his gig last night, so wouldn't be around. I know that sounds bad, but he only works 5 saturdays in 3 months and there is no fixed pattern so they often creep up on me unexpectedly!

Made a huge bowl of popcorn and then made toffee sauce and sat and watched the 'Lets dance for Comic Relief' final last night. Loved it! Thought Paddy and 'Keith' were really funny but Robert Webb deserved to win, I haven't laughed so much in ages. The toffee sauce was fabulous too, even if I do say so myself!

Todays lunch will be turkey fajitas, am looking forward to making a very spicy salsa and refried beans. Bit of a favourite in our house. My OH is painting my garden bench with preservative and will then be putting it back in my garden so I can finally get out there and put some order into it!

I spoke to Tris very briefly yesterday - he was really grumpy due to needing more pain pills, so didn't stay online long.

I hope you all have a peaceful and loving Sunday and are kind to yourself today.

Warm gentle hugs hugs.gifto all who want or need them.

Diva.x

Good morning Diva, Good morning everyone :D

Woke early to the dawn chorus. It's lovely to hear the birds singing ... somehow I can't do the old 'lying in' thing on a Sunday. Though I'll probably end up having a nap this afternoon

Today I thought I'd go very frugal and try something with corned beef. I've put some emergency supplies into my storecupboard and need to find myself a good easy to make recipe for it. Yesterday I really stretched my mince for the bolognese (with lentils, mushrooms, carrots), so I ended up with 4 two person portions from the pack. OH makes HM pasta from eggs and flour so it makes a very cheap and healthy-ish meal. I'm trying to make sure I have some ready meals available in the freezer for week day nights. It saves me a lot of time if I do this.

I'm trying to cut my portion costs down, while maintaining a good healthy and tasty meal option. The plan is to spend the same as normal, stretch my portions in my batch making, so that I can put a little more away in my storecupboard. Hence yesterday, I managed to get enough for four meals for us out of yesterday's mince rather than the usual three. It only cost pennies to put in the extra carrot and lentils.

Off to look for corned beef recipes :D

Have a lovely OS day everyone and big (((hugs))) to those who feel a little down or are unwell.
Enjoying an MSE OS life :D
  • Morning all,

it looks absolutely beautiful out - almost like a summer's day with clear blue sky.
I am going to buy a rotary line - I still didn't get a base sorted, but just realised I have an old wooden garden table that has a hole in the middle for a parasol, so will improvise & use that for my rotary line temporarily! I desperately want to get sheets & towels out while it's like this.

Also going to sort out some healthier eating having just seen pics on facebook of a friend's 40th... OMG I look like an elephant!!!!!!! I have 5 months till graduation ceremony (assuming I pass everything) so need to use that as my motivation. Must have a look at the OS losing weight thread.

Diva, yes hun, it is pretty exhausting at the moment, I never knew it was possible to be this shattered & still keep going. But only 12 more weeks (9 of it in placement) and the whole thing will be over. And I am having the summer off. I wanted Paddy & Keith to win - I thought Robert Webb was very good as well though.
SnowyOwl, congratulations on the job offer!!! And definitely a good idea to keep your options open.
Katie/LoopyLinz, glad you've both seen doctors & hope you're feeling better now.
Aussie, are you sick of sweet potatoes yet??
AppleMint, don't know what you want to do with the corned beef, but one of my DD's favourite cheap & easy suppers is to cook those crispy potato squares (frozen bag about 90p), then add a tin of chopped corned beef & 1-2 tins beans (depending how dry or sloppy you want it, lol), stir that together a bit, then top with loads of grated cheese & bung back in the oven for 10-15 mins.

Mainly study for me today, in between the usual washing, DW, and cooking my 25p chicken & veg pie. Also will make some carrot soup to take to work for lunches. I got a good assortement of YS deli meats between 20-40p in Asda the other day as well. Think I will start making myself salad boxes too.

((((((hugs)))))) for everyone needing them, have a good day all.

Good morning MSD, BB, Squiggly & Applemint, as well as all those that come after.

MSD - good luck with getting your garden sorted - I went to the grden centre yesterday to pick up a few bits to brighten the pots on our front wall - forgot that when we had the hassle with the little chavs up the way last year they nicked / broke several of my pots though so I didn't have as many! Ended up with a few more plants than pot space so two pansies went in the garden instead.

Csarina - I agree with MSD - you're dead right to cover your back. Sorry to hear of all the problems at the hospital yesterday - at least you know OH's eyes are fine though.

Betheebee - what news on your brothers? And how did you family gathering go? I bet DD was a proud mum wasn't she!

AppleMint - I know what you mean about not being able to lie in - I used to be fantaastic at it, but these days once I'm properly awake I have to get up. I'm worst on holiday - for our first week I might well be up before 7am a fair bit - it's just so lovely to sit and look out over the loch, and all peaceful.....*sighs* - oh well, three weeks and I'll be there! Oh - what about a form of shepherds/cottage pie, using corned beef instead of the mince?

Squiggly god luck with getting your line sorted out!

Morwenna Cherry Cake & Ginger Beer is a wonderful book - my friend bought it for my birthday last year and I love it!

Just sitting here with my first sunday morning bucket of tea - still trying to decide what to bake this morning for our friends coming over later! OH is still inbed - he was out with the rugby lads last night but said he wasn't going to be late back.....after midnight when I went to bed there was no sign of him but he was in the bed this monring so he must have been ever so quiet when he did get in! Not a lot to do other than that - I need to portion out the tagine - I'm going to put it in my proper tagine pot and warm through in the oven as that can then go straight to table and looks fantastic. Flatbreads to make - JO's recipe says that the dough needs an hour proving so had better get on with those. I'll make houmous too - should be able to do that ahead of time to. OH will be making crumble topping once he's up and about.

Have a wonderful day all - will pop back later.

    lovely here too:j
we're off to our first carboot of the year soon - I love them:j (buying not selling) then plan the afternoon in the garden. I mowed the lawn for the first time yesterday - it was very long in places and guess what jumped out at me - another bl**dy frog:eek:  why cant they leave me alone! so DH had to do all the edges and I stuck to the middle:D
Roast beef for the men and quorn cottage pie(HM) for me for dinner - we always have it at night on a Sunday which gives us all day to do other things.

(((hugs))) to all the poorly ones or those feeling low x

    Morning all :hello:

((((((hugs)))))) to everyone, especially LoopyLinz and Katie

A beautiful morning over here, although I said that yesterday and it clouded over and rained within half an hour. Me a jinx? Never...

Writing is almost done - just a bit more this morning - and it can go to the client tomorrow. Today has turned into a chicken day. One of my girls is not well so I have to check and see if she is eggbound and then give her a warm bath to relax her. if an egg is stuck, it should come out. If not, it's a trip to the vet. All three chickens need their lice treatment and their feet scrubbing up and oiling. Then their ark has to be moved and clean fresh bedding put in. If I get a moment, the cats also need worming, a prospect I am not looking forward to and keep putting off.

I'm determined to get on with the veg growing today, so have plans to finish off the potato bed ready for planting and sow some more seeds now the weather is a bit warmer. My mangetout plants are ready to go in, as are the strawberries, and I have to get some salad leaves started off.

I'm thinking something leek and sausagey for the slow cooker today, but am resigned to having to use the gas oven to cook some of Twink's hobnobs later. Hubby takes a whole batch to work every week and he loves them. To make it as economical as possible, I'll cook a couple of cakes at the same time, a pear crumble and some jacket potatoes for dinner tonight.

Have a great day everyone and enjoy the sunshine if you have it.

    Good morning everyone :hello:

Work has been just as manic recently. I had an observation last week and I've got another coming up this week - along with parents' evenings etc etc. :( I have found another job to apply for at a school that I did a fair amount of supply at a couple of years ago, so that form will be getting done later today.

    SnowyOwl - great news!

I need to get some salmon out of the freezer for supper tonight. I think that it'll be honey soy salmon tonight. Mmmmmm. Hopefully soup for lunch too.

I've also got a swap agreed on Readitswapit so that needs parcelling up and posting. I'll hopefully get DH to post it as I'm out and about tomorrow after school - I'm zipping to London to watch Oliver! as my birthday present from a friend.

    Have a good Sunday everyone.

    Morning all :hello:

EssexHebridean: I'm loving the book, it's a real walk down memory lane isn't it? Paddington Bear's Marmalade Buns went down a storm, even though normally the children don't like marmalade.

DD1 her BF and DSis are coming for their tea later so I will do roast chicken and all the trimmings. DSis wants to try Marmalade Buns but they have nearly all gone so I may have to make another batch

I need a magic wand to make all the mess go away too - I love to clean, but hate tidying

Hugs for all, have a good day everyone
