    In what country?

Our birth rate can't sustain an aging population at the moment?

That's ok, because immigrants will fill up the gaps :)

How much do we value children as a society? Someone will have to work in the future to pay our pensions.

Depends if you view that they are bringing future tax payers in to the world.(I agree on the employer bit but there is statory paternity pay that is paid by the goverment)

It is like saying why should younger generations support the old?

    Are you quoting me?

See this is my point. I had two weeks off if I had no children it would be no weeks.

How can you give to someone without making it less equal for someone else.

so would you deny someone sick pay just because you hadn't been lucky enough to be ill as well.

even if i don't end up having kids myself i wouldn't resent my taxes paying parents time off to look after a newborn - but i do resent the fact that the current arrangement is so clearly sexist.

Cannon Fodder, the money is already coming from somewhere. I don't see why it coming from central government would increase this cycle. It would merely take the direct burden off small businesses. Life is hard enough for them already. I'm sure a lot of otherwise decent people have found themselves having to make prejudicial employment decisions simple because they know their business couldn't handle a maternity payment.

sorry, I should have included "extra" when saying "money" in my sentence...

past improvements have created a circularity that makes the cost of living what it is today.

IF they improve maternity pay/terms further, that's a continuation/extension of the circularity...

most employers will give you unpaid leave if you've been working there long enough and if you ask nicely.

The best way to avoid any discrimination is for the Government to pay all maternity leave benefits and tax ALL businesses a fair proportion of the costs (increase current taxes by a percentage or two). Businesses will then not have to worry about maternity payments. Obviously they will have the recruitment trouble if someone leaves but this could be partly subsidised or free services offered though job centre plus etc rather than thoe poxy agencies who charge 15+% commission.

i'm happy for my taxes to fund statutory maternity pay. seems one of the more reasonable uses of taxpayer funds to me.

i don't think more financial burden should be placed on companies as it will just make companies gravitate away from employing women. i'd rather have women in work, paying taxes for most of the time, except for a year here and there when they are having kids, than permanently out of work and claiming significant benefits 100% of the time.

Did i say me? Some companies only do statory sick pay!
I have been for it but said that it will still lead to problems.

Sorry people do resent the time off parents have off I am a parent and I know it is true.

You seem to have a wider chip on your sholder about this as my coments are not sexist but that it is impossible to be fair to ALL WORKERS.

It's ironic how may women bosses go on record as refusing to employ women of child bearing age.

We have a large local nursery that employs around 25 childcare assistants. When DD2 left there were 7 of them off on maternity leave. For small businesses that must be crippling.
