Whether the money comes from the business or the Govt, either prices or taxes will be higher than they would otherwise be, and then everyone else needs to ask for pay rises, and so inflationary factors make everything more expensive, and so the mothers-to-be ask for more maternity, and so on, and so on.

    = A Circularity.

Cannon Fodder, the money is already coming from somewhere. I don't see why it coming from central government would increase this cycle. It would merely take the direct burden off small businesses. Life is hard enough for them already. I'm sure a lot of otherwise decent people have found themselves having to make prejudicial employment decisions simple because they know their business couldn't handle a maternity payment.

Do people really think there shouldn't be ANY post-birth benefit entitlement? I guess that would keep the population down.

    In what country?

Our birth rate can't sustain an aging population at the moment?

On another point how many of these opinions change when children come along.:)
  • Why should there be any paternity money if someone wants kids thats fine but why should their employers or workmates be made to pay for it.

you beat me to it ninky

Depends if you view that they are bringing future tax payers in to the world.(I agree on the employer bit but there is statory paternity pay that is paid by the goverment)

It is like saying why should younger generations support the old?

The only way to get rid of this type of sexism and prevent employers shying away from women of childbearing age is to make parental post-birth leave available to either parent.
Agreed. I was lucky enough to be made redundant days before the birth of my daughter, without which I would not have enjoyed the happiest three months of my life. Or are we not interested in getting dads involved with their children?

See this is my point. I had two weeks off if I had no children it would be no weeks.

How can you give to someone without making it less equal for someone else.

I would also make it so the maternity entitlement could be divided so, for example, the mother could look after the chilld for the first three months and the father or other primary carer could do the remainder.this would give people the option to leave work for less time but know their child was in safe hands.

How much do we value children as a society? Someone will have to work in the future to pay our pensions.
