Much as I hate to say it, I agree with Sir Alan.

What I also see are working parents who haven't got the correct backup if one of their offspring is ill or the school closes for the day, as they then just take a day off without warning. It's their co workers who then have to pick up their slack.

And those without "offspring" are never off sick themselves leaving others to pick up their slack? I find that those who are regularly ill on a Monday are those without children. Some parents don't have backup and some workers without children are still suffering from saturday night on a monday.

Once when I visit my DH at work in Italy there were three, THREE very tiny babies in the office. It was seen as delightful that these busy men were giving their wives a few hours to go shopping/hairdressors, or just be and it was wonderful to see. Secretaries were cooing to babies, and work was still getting done. I can see its not a long term option, but I rmemebr being little going to work with a parent was REALLY exciting, and I was givin paper and pens and had to entertain myself quietly. Flexibilty and understanding were wonderful things.

More Mondays are taken off sick than any other day of the week, and yes it is invariably those without children that have a higher sickness record.

When I had my children, husbands didn't get any paternity leave and use to take 1 week from their annual holiday entitlement.

Why do fathers get two weeks given to them now? I can understand one week being given, but two seems excessive. It's not as though they are having to recover from the trauma of giving birth or that their bodies need time to rest after adapting to carrying a child for 9 months.

Because this is the 21st Century and things change for the better. Did you know they used to send kids to clean chimneys!!

Having a father there can only help the mother to recover and give them exactly what you said they need.

Why do they threaten the viability of an organisation?.

As stated before it's not financial, 92% of SMP is recoverable, for small employers 100% is recoverable.

Putting aside the arguments about advertising costs/training etc.

For small businesses you also have the effect on cashflow. Although you could claim the money back you now have two payments to make at the end of each month, you can't really negotiate extended credit terms with someoe going on maternity leave. In the current climate it's not exactly easy to get extended credit from the banks either.

Helping and being a farther. Belive it or not we now play hands on roles and like it.

Parenting is not just about a mother either.;)

So you just stop being a hands on father after your 2 weeks is up? Or will you continue to be a hands on father when you come home from work and at the weekends, just like the fathers who use to take 1 weeks holiday after the birth did? Parenting lasts a life time, not just 2 weeks.

Maternity leave is about the mother (whether you like it or not) as she is the one who has to recover from pregnancy and childbirth, before returning to work.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Any other parents paying lots and lots of tax feel like they are being made out to be benefit scrounging cheating scum???

It really is quite shocking given that my total tax and NI contributions (never mind council tax!) is far greater than I expect to ever personally receive in benefits!

I'm just wondering.....and again, its not a judgement just a question, would any of the working parents here be prepared to give up any rights in the current climate if they new their company was struggling etc? Or would it be a deal breaker?

Who do you think I was letting rest while off work?

Most women 50 years ago never worked at all!

A very strong response by yourself do you have a problem with a farther helping look after the child and a mother during the first two weeks.

Sorry farthers are more hands on than any time in the past (well the ones that still are in a family unit)
