She perhaps lives in a world and performs in an area of endeavour in which her personal reputation for delivering work, sometimes from abroad, reliably on deadline and without problems is fundamental to her and worth tens of thousands of pounds to her.

"Sorry: I got a virus. :o " doesn't cut it in such an environment.

I'm sure you're perfectly right thats why no businesses use windows at all, for that exact same reason... oh wait, hang on, yes they do hhmmm the words "out of " @rse" "your" and "speaking" spring to mind, probably not in that order.

When I open a laptop in a foreign hotel or other location and have half an hour in which to complete something critical, I need it to fire up and work immediately and faultlessly. I don't have time to sort out any new piece of malware that is trying to attack it. I don't have time to send a "HiJack This", or whatever, to MSE and hope that aliEnRIK :A or Browntoa :A isn't too busy helping flossy_splodge though her latest feat of incompetence to deal with it.
I'm sure when you're in that foreign hotel and just opening that laptop (I assume its a mac) it would take you less than half hour to complete "critical" business with it;);).

Anyway maybe you should learn something then. If I'm in a foreign hotel with half an hour to do something "critical";);), etc etc I can do it either in windoze and not worry about malware, or do it in linux and have even less malware to worry about than you on your mac.

Also if you're having to deal with malware like that regularly review you're security and stop browsing those !!!!!! sites, you know the ones with the man and his unnatural connection with his computer.
And the last thing I want to do is learn to become a computer geek and salivate over being shut in a room, surrounded by servers, drooling over computer code.
News for you, you are a computer geek only differenence is instead of drooling over computer code you probably have some form of sexual relationship with your computer like most apple fanboys.
In such situations, the fact that a laptop which works may have cost a few hundred pounds more than one that doesn't is utterly irrelevant.
In reality the cheaper one works just as well and you know it, as well as those !!!!!! sites you need to lay off those "pc vs mac" adverts cos they aint true despite how much you'd love them to be.
It is because you have never been able to grasp that fact that your chosen User Name is so appropriate. It is perhaps also why you cannot afford a Mac. The philosophy upon which you work is the embrace of false economy.
TBH I could afford one if I really need one but whats the point??? It doesn't do anything my pcs cant. Simple really, why spend more than you need to, not into all the hype.
What you cannot seem to take on board is that some people don't greatly care if a Mac is more expensive than a PC; they buy one because they want one, or need one, and they can afford to indulge the cost of it.
Most people do you idiot, most mac-fanboys dont.
What they cannot afford is the price of failure arising from buying a cheaper computer and using an operating system that is compromised to a degree that leaves them vulnerable to being unable to work within time-crucial deadlines.

Theres that fantasy world of yours again:rotfl:. I've a computer that was free, suffers from no vulnerability, never leaves me unable to work even to time critical deadlines, oh and its 8yrs old and runs faster than any mac/windoze based pc of its age and probably a lot of the newer ones too.

I commend to you the wisdom in the quote of John Ruskin that forms cheesy.mike's signature. But I am fairly confident you will choose to ignore it and remain, as a result, too poor to buy a Mac, venting your frustration at that fact by vilifying those who have benefited from observing it.
Commend away you pompous fool, I dont see the point in wasting my money on trival things that are really over hyped gimmicks.

Thanks for your contribution to this thread about a lady's desire for, and subsequent successful acquisition of, a 17" MacBook Pro.

It is your customary personal perversion to intrude upon any constructive thread involving Macs (this one is entitled "MacBook Pro help") that appears in this sub-forum and vent your personal emotional frustration at your incapacity to indulge in the personal purchase of a Mac with a vituperative demonstration of illiteracy, bigotry, ignorance and lack of self-discipline that precludes anyone from regarding you as having anything intelligent to say.

I rarely enter these Mac versus PC arguments, which are fundamentally futile, but I did so on this occasion in order to expose you for what you are and nail your expressed prejudices to the wall (before you edit them any further).

You have adequately demonstrated why nobody in their right mind would be dumb enough to employ you in a capacity sufficient to remunerate you with enough money to purchase a computer which you have admitted that you would like to be able to afford - and for that I thank you.

What you have made abundantly obvious is that a world in which anything other than the severe limitations of your own personal experience of what life has to offer eludes everything but your prejudices.

Please rest assured that the next time you stoop to telling the new owner of a Mac that she (or he) is a fool for buying it, instead of giving them their moment in the sun, I shall be happy to demonstrate to them, with your own words above, the mentality and ignorance of the person who has criticised them.

As cheesy.mike has said, Mac owners support each other in this forum. Some, like he and isofa and Marty J, and several others of similar geniality and wisdom, do so with kindly charm. Others, like I, protect their gentle backs from embittered, illiterate cretins with whom it is beneath their own personal dignity to engage and trash.

You are not equipped with the necessary intellect, knowledge, experience, objectivity or literacy to do anything other than fail, humiliatingly, in the battles you wage unwisely against those who choose to buy Macs. You are comprehensively deficient in the weaponry to do it, let alone in the ability to deploy it if you had any.

So, please, stop wasting everybody's time with your embittered bile against those who buy Apple Macs. It just backfires on you.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Then perhaps you shouldn't post such embittered bile yourself?

You seem to be living in some fantasy mission critical world where PC's get Viruses every 4 seconds, while your Mac never gets the spinning beachball of doom...
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
  • Thanks for all the help and will let you know how i get on when my mac arrives Tuesday. is there any software you would recommend?

You are most welcome I'm glad you liked my contribution enough to appreciate it and thank me for it.

Tell me exactly what the help was that the OP required... could it have been... oh yes it was... but no it cant have been no one worries about that... but yes it was wasn't it, the price. I wonder why that is? Ever noticed with windoze its viruses and with macs its the price?

Good use of your dictionary throughout the post though well done:T, unfortunately and despite your view I'm quite literate and able to understand those big words of yours.
I rarely enter these Mac versus PC arguments, which are fundamentally futile, but I did so on this occasion in order to expose you for what you are and nail your expressed prejudices to the wall (before you edit them any further).

Rarely?? Try always. It is your customary and personal perversion to intrude upon any constructive thread involving Macs and PCs that appear in this sub-forum and vent your personal emotional frustration at your physical and mental inadequacies, you know the ones you hide behind you pretty PC and probably a sports car as well, along with your arrogant and condescending manner. My edits are simply for spelling.

You have adequately demonstrated why nobody in their right mind would be dumb enough to employ you in a capacity sufficient to remunerate you with enough money to purchase a computer which you have admitted that you would like to be able to afford - and for that I thank you.

I'd love to meet you in the capacity of my employment, you'd probably !!!! a brick as people like you do. :rotfl:

You've obviously confused me with someone else, I thought I was a bigot, why would I purchase one? Being as intolerant as I am. You left out that if I wanted one I'd install Linux on it, better eye-candy and more secure you see. But really I have better stuff to spend my money on, like my children and mortgage, rather than an overpriced PC.

What you have made abundantly obvious is that a world in which anything other than the severe limitations of your own personal experience of what life has to offer eludes everything but your prejudices.

What you've made abundantly clear is that if you swapped "apple" or "mac" with a religion of your choice you'd be strapping a bodysuit of explosives to younger boys/men and sending them out, with a switch in your hand, to kill the non-believers. You're a fanatic.
Please rest assured that the next time you stoop to telling the new owner of a Mac that she (or he) is a fool for buying it, instead of giving them their moment in the sun, I shall be happy to demonstrate to them, with your own words above, the mentality and ignorance of the person who has criticised them.

Others, like I, protect their gentle backs from embittered, illiterate cretins with whom it is beneath their own personal dignity to engage and trash.
Now you need to stop making things up, I'm not part of your special fantasy world, I've never called anyone a fool for buying a pretty PC with OSX on it. Oh and I'm sure mac users everywhere will be able to sleep at night knowing you're here to wage war on the non-believers

Everyone supports each other on this forum, after all that's what its here for. You've demonstrated with the above you are an egotistical, fanatic; its you that would separate us into uncooperative groups. Its always us and them with you isn't it, along with your penchant for arrogant over dramatic fantasy.

Such religious fervour, I'm assuming these personal attacks are down to my pointing out your dirty secret and your subsequent damaged ego, so you are forgiven your childish attempt at intelligent insult. Well done all the same it was mildly amusing.

So, please, stop wasting everybody's time with your embittered bile against those who buy Apple Macs. It just backfires on you.

We're wasting no ones time except ours, everyone loves reading an argument.
Peace my pompous, narrow minded, arrogant, and egotistical fanatic. The war will be won some day I'm sure.

http://www.maclibre.com is a great place to start for free Mac Software. Don't think about programmes you want to use on it (eg. I want Excel), think about what you want to do (eg. I want a spreadsheet programme).
There is very little a Mac can't do that a Windows machine can, and loads it can do that a Windows machine can't. I have Windows installed on mine to play some games...

Thanks for all the help and will let you know how i get on when my mac arrives Tuesday. is there any software you would recommend?

    gallifreyangirl,

I share cheesy.mike's expressed sentiment of goodwill to you as a Mac user but I'm by no means sure from your postings in this thread that you are a newbie to the world of computing Cupertino-style?

If so, I add my own welcome. :) :)

What software to recommend really depends on two things; what you want to use it for and what's already on it.

Certainly, I would recommend iLife and iWork - plus Aperture 2 if you enjoy photography. Thereafter, it's a case of what you, yourself, would like to add.

Assuming (from Completed Auctions on eBay of 17" ProBooks - I'm not a stalker!) that this is the Mac you've bought, it looks as though it is a Santa Rosa chipset model of the type sold by Apple between June 2007 and February 2008. As such, it will probably have either iLife 06 or iLife 08 already on it.

That listing also mentions "MS Office" but gives no indication as to which version. If it hasn't got the Intel-native "Office 2008 for Mac" version on it, you can either buy that, new and sealed, for about £70 on eBay or install Open Office.

Firefox (of which there is a "British English" version) is nice to have, in addition to Safari, but I also like Camino (especially on a laptop) - it's lean and fast. That, too, has a "British English" version: download the Multilingual version to get that.

Of utilities I find PTH Pasteboard very handy and the basic version is free.

I also use Temperature Monitor to keep an eye on internal heat. That's free, too.

You might find this thread helpful - particularly Marty J's post #14.

I wish you every success and much pleasure from your new Mac. :money:

PS. Apologies if I interrupted your thread but I am sick and tired of asinity pitching illiterately into every thread about Macs that he sees and making snide comments about those who buy them. I felt it was about time he was lured into exposing himself for just what he is.

    Which, fortunately, he did. :)

Pin away, I'll not change it, why would I? I think you'll find yourself the troll of more PC and mac threads than myself.

Remember the start of this was you with your over dramatic, over the top fantastical reply to my simple comment about £850 not being cheap. The only difference this time is that someone took the time to challenge you on it rather than just let you get away with it.

But such is your capacity for pulling the wool over your own eyes you wont even see the truth of the matter.
