Are you absolutely sure that the caller was who they said they were. Could it have been somebody winding you up?

If the call WAS from BT, I think this is an appalling experience.

Forget youtube, I'd find out (if possible) the address of whoever is in charge at BT and write a strongly worded (but brief, to the point, non-sarcastic, non-abusive) letter of complaint and include the fact that you recorded the entire conversation.

I wouldn't send them the recording with the first letter.

    See what the response is.

I'm not usually in favour of compensation, but in this instance I think you should at least get some token recompense in addition to a grovelling apology.

Send it to The Register. They will get you a result, I should think.

I have heard that some companies use other companies names to try to sell you things. What if it was one of those, and not BT?Actually ,do you have any proof who it was?

Why anyone would buy advertising or a website is beyond me....
  • Thanks for the feedback :)
Yes it was definatly from bt the guy said btcustomerstreet was formaly ufindus, I have spoke to the complaints department at btcustomerstreet and all they said was they would get back to me in 10 working days.
Although i recorded the conversation am i right in understanding that call centers have to record all calls by law?

No,call centres may record some calls ( I think they have to tell you if they do) but it's not the law they have to record all calls.

If someone told me they had recorded my call I would be doubtful they had though.

Why was the OP recording the call anyway as a matter of course - seems a strange thing to do routinely ?

Did you advise them the cal was recorded? If not cant really do much with it, Except youtube.....

If you record a call, you dont have to inform the recipient that its being recorded if you had no intention of sharing it with a third party at the time of the recording. I would have been for personal use - no disclosure necessary.

You can send a copy back to the company - no third party involved still and if push came to shove and Court got involved, then Im sure you'd still be able to use it there too - as you had no intention at the time of the recording for it to be used for any other purpose or for anyone else. Its all about the intentions for use at the time - but things change over time...

Im buying me a phone tapping device next week...
