Sadly, some people just want to be different and have an exotic pet that they can boast about. So many animals suffer through this ignorance. In particular reptiles and snakes that have very specific and expensive needs. They should be left in the wild where they belong, and that definitely means primates in my book.

There are so many thousands of dogs and cats needing someone to love, and they make ideal pets.I hate to see animals and birds caged,so to me,dogs and cats are really the only animals that can have a good life.

It's no secret that I absolutely ADORE Snakes, I find them totally fascinating & both my Stepbrother & Brother have had them in the past BUT I said I never will because I don't believe they make good Pets, even if you have a huge home to build a huge vivarium. I always wonder just how much the Owners know about the animals, ok some people are really well up on Exotics, but some like my Brother

He was actually keeping a Snake in it's tank on his bedroom floor, then he'd have his music on so loud you could feel the same floor vibrating, as Snakes go on vibrations, it must've been one unhappy Snake. Luckily he hasn't got Pets now as when he was a kid he hid a Hamster (In it's cage) in his wardrobe so my Mum wouldn't find out (Of course, yours truely soon grassed him up, generally I never did but when animals are concerned!)

Anyway, I think alot of people just get these poor animals & keep them badly, maybe they don't mean to but they don't bother to learn about what the animal needs. What gets me is when I nip in the pet shop, which I try to do less & less & use online suppliers), they have all these African Greys & such in cages, to me that's so so wrong, I hate to see animals like this, who probably live longer than the adult buying it, in cages in Pet Shops.

Even worse when they never let it out to fly! I don't think Monkeys should legally be allowed to be kept as Pets, IMO only proper Rescues should have them & not for rehoming, just if they can't be released into the wild. As the above poster says, there's tons of Dogs, Cats & other animals in Rescues needing homes! I hate to see Cats confined to indoors too, fair enough if they have a garden that's enclosed but otherwise I don't like it. Rant over!
  • I wouldn't even know which local vets would take a monkey, idk why Simon above doesn't, but even if they do, how much experience are they gonna have with them unless they see Zoo animals? I bet most Vets don't routinely deal with Monkeys & i'd want any 'pet' of mine to be with a vet that is experienced with it's type (And local!)

I dunno if they can be Insured but I bet treatment wouldn't be cheap! I really dunno what's wrong with a Dog?!

Jut to clarify: The reason I dont treat monkeys is the same reason I dont treat reptiles; I simply dont have enough knowledge - It is a specialist area and requires specialist knowledge and training. I treat chelonians; this too is relatively specialist but at least I know what I am doing in that area!

Ahh I did wonder if it was that, I can't say i've ever seen a Monkey while in the waiting room!
  • ANY primate is capable of carrying and transmitting Hepatitis and HIV.

Surely if all the other very good reasons do not persuade your husband, that one fact should be enough, especially when you have children in the house? (I understand they can carry and transmit a lot of communicable diseases that can be transmitted to humans!)

OP please do let us know if he has seen sense!!

Lol, the amount of "house" dogs and cats you get these days really isn't much of a different thing - it's just a bigger cage

Have to say, as a non-pet person, I find it quite strange the strong feelings on here against the idea...to me the idea really doesn't seem any more wrong than taking a cat or dog from it's natural environment and domesticating it for your entertainment...but many on here seem quite happy with that as an idea...

I do remember, though, the heartache Ross from friends suffered when Marcel started humping everything and had to be sent off to a zoo...definite food for thought :)

Ahh, well, domestication theories have evolved in the last 15 years ago, and although not commonly taught there is a strong theory that with some species of domestic animal domestication could have been non-human animal instigated. :)

I' in the minority that I believe some 'alternative' animals sufer no more from domestication than traditional ones. Social litle rabbits kept alone in hutches always concern me, but I think that ALL pets should bekept in 'suitable' environments by responsible people who are prepared to take time to gather knowledge. I think the occurance of this in UK with monkeys is....well, lets say, very, very low :)

I don't think the orginal poster said they were actually getting a monkey. They just wanted to know if it was legal which it is.
I am sure her partner has moved on to much more exiciting things now.
