  • the first time i saw one of these in my mums bathroom i thought it was some sort of alien....mum had to explain when i screamed.....
  • My husband is just bringing up all the old floor tiles in our kitchen and there are loads of silverfish scurrying for their lives!! I've never actually seen them in the kitchen but they clearly live under my tiles.

They seem gross, but the house is so old with floorboards throughout that surely it's impossible to get rid of them all.

    They are harmless though? Right?

I hate to admit this but I think they are beautful and could happily live with them.
    Are you serious!?

It depends on how you obtain it and how you use it.

will a sulfur candle work , i know thats the old way of getting rid of any pests , usually if it needs air to live that will do the job
  • Hi all,

I have silverfish, and 2 cats. Clearly the silverfish aren't tasty, otherwise my cats - who chase the silverfish - would do more than just sit and watch them!

Anyway - I read that you can use Epsom Salts to help kill/prevent silverfish, so any tips on how to use it most effectively? The grains are rather large, bigger than grains of sugar, would it be better if I ground them a little finer? Do I set traps (and with what to attract them?) and how?

    Thanks :)

Raid Crawling Insect aerosol spray. Available from Tesco in a red can. Works a treat. Safe for kids and animals, claims to have a 2 month life and because its an aerosol you can blast under washing machines and fridges and freezers. You pretty much watch 'em go belly up and then vac up the remains. Haven't had any further problems since we started using this.

I got some after reading this and eventually it did the trick. I only saw one at a time in the bathroom and occasionally one in the bath but when they took out the bath and removed the flooring to make a wet room they were everywhere. I thought that was the end of them but a couple of months later they came back and I saw one on the landing too. Unknown to me they had been eating away at the back of the carpet and when I was searching for the silverfish realised that it had to come up.
So I removed the carpet and had tiles laid, then I used the Red Raid everywhere - along the bottom of the skirting boards and every little cranny in every room. Realised they were at the back of a cupboard in the kitchen which meant they were everywhere, so I spayed and sprayed and would do a tour some nights. Eventually I thought they were gone but I saw one again in the bathroom after about a year. I began the spray campaign again for a few weeks and now it has been 2 years and no sign at all. I will be spraying every year when I do the spring clean which I have just started. They are destructive and very hard to get rid of completely but thank you for the Red Raid tip - it worked in the end.
