Silver fish are totally harmless. My parents get them in their nice warm dry house. I don't have silverfish because I'm a poor student and I live in a badly insulated house so it's too cold for them. Plus we have fitted carpets (with no underlay) so there's nothing for them to hid beneath. We do have mice though. Having mice in your house is bad. Silverfish I'd just live with.

sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but we seem to have a problem with silverfish here. The funny thing is we are very very dry here (in Australia). So obviously reducing damp isn't going to happen. Can anyone confirm if cloves really work? would a spray of clove oil help?

Would normally just leave them be, but I've found a half eaten book.

  • I'm interested to see whether citronella will get rid of them when I get some. Ours must be a hardy bunch as we don't have a lot of heating on and they live on a tiled floor in the bathroom! I haven't got the heart to squish them and we're getting quite a few generations of the family, I put down zoflora disinfectant and they seem to disappear for a little while then the big ones return. I saaw an advert for that film slither and I started to have wild thoughts about the silverfish getting that big!
  • Just thought do they live on paper hen as mr hq always leaves books on the bathroom floor, perhaps taking that away would clear them?

Softstuff, you are not alone! We have a lot of silverfish in our house which is very old. The silly thing is, they seem to live under the Rayburn...or at least thats where they scuttle when I put the light on at night...and it must be red hot under there.
Our cats chase them but, to be honest, they don't bother me as long as I can see them to avoid squishing them with my bare feet.

we had a terrible infestation a few months back. they gradually multiplied till I couldnt stand it anymore.

I went to our local DIY shop and was recommended Woodlice powder (it cost £2.99)

its like a puffer spray that you put around where they are appearing from. You should have seen them run!!! Anyway, it killed lots of them, and they havent been seen for a while, although the odd one pops out now and again. The guy who sold my the woodlouse killer says you can never get rid of silverfish, but you can restrict their numbers. This really did work, I would recommend it! :o

I've just checked in my old book of Household hints and it recommends Boric acid and sugar will kill them. You sprinkle it where they've been seen, though not if you have children or pets. Good luck, I can't stand them but I'd rather have silverfish than the huge house spiders we keep getting!

  • Anyone tried the plug in ultrasonic pest repeller for silver fish?? Also read on Wiki that 'Sal ammoniac' also does the job. Any hints on where to buy this Sal ammoniac? Also any ideas on where to get Boric acid??
