  • Know it's an old thread but if you have kids & pets & hate using chemicals this stuff is great- tried & tested!

Diatomaceous Earth is 100% natural. It is a fine powder- simply "squirt" it wherever the insects live or crawl. Diatomaceous Earth controls insects WITHOUT using chemicals.

Diatomaceous Earth is the fossilised remains of diatoms (a type of algae). The diatoms have a hard silica shell which does not decompose in the lakes, or sea where diatoms live. Over long periods of time large amounts of diatoms are exposed on the surface from dried out lakes. Thousands of tons of this natural product are available worldwide.

Diatomaceous Earth controls insects by physical means not chemical. The DE is applied to where the insects live and is picked up by the insect. Squirt into cracks and crevices, where the ants are or rub into your dog's coat to control fleas / ticks. Insects will die from contact with DE within a few days. Totally safe for children, pets and wildlife.

I get mine from Green Gardener- it's quite expensive but lasts ages I use it all over the place. (under woodlice & earwid control)

The first time I used it my cat got it all over her nose!:rotfl:

Hello, we go through phases of having problems with silverfish, we can go quite a while without seeing them then i can squash 5 or 6 in 10 minutes in our living room. We have always had the odd one or two in the bathroom and downstairs toilet but in the past year they have found their way into a cupboard (with plates and stuff in), hallway and living room. Is there any way of getting rid of the damed things, google wasnt much help?

I hate to admit this but I think they are beautful and could happily live with them. All I know is they like damp rooms so a dehumidifier may be a temporary fix??

Silverfish are usually found where there is damp I found that sprinkling borax round skirting boards and the back of cupboards helps
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

The question is do you have a problem with damp? some thing like ant killer will sort them out but it wont help the damage damp does.

    Hi vikki_louise,

There's an earlier thread with advice on getting rid of silver fish that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

    Pink
  • Its common name comes from the animal's silvery blue colour, combined with the fish-like appearance of its movements, while the scientific name indicates the silverfish's diet of carbohydrates such as sugar or starches. They are tiny (about half to one millimeter in length) it has antennas, hairs, and feet. Silverfishes are nocturnal beings. They can damage your home.

Silverfishes may be crawling around in your clothes when you hang them in the closet since they eat your clothes and also attracted to eating silk, synthetic fabrics and cotton clothing.
Silverfish feeds on our plants. Your beautiful and healthy plants may not be so beautiful anymore if silverfish homes in their leaves. They will slowly dry and then die.

    Isn't it terrible?
