Barclays Golden ISA feedback

  • My wife set up a "Golden ISA" with Barclays last week, but she just heard today that they couldn't pay the interest monthly into our bank account as we bank with Lloyds!!

What a farce, we are pensioners & rely on ISA interest to top up our pensions.

Interest rates being so low means that we try to get the best return we can.

We will have to cancel the ISA & take one out with Nationwide.

Their anniversery ISA pays 2.95% but at least they pay it into our Lloyds current account

Hi frames1_uk, do you already have an account with Barclays? If so I'd advise you to give them a call on 08457 555555 and open one over the phone (sometimes this isn't possible but it's worth giving it a try if you do already bank with them).

I don't bank with them no, that's why I made the appointment, otherwise I'd have done it online.
    Oh well. Thanks anyway :o)

No doubt when I go for the appt, the lady will try and sell me something else, perhaps they will have an even better rate!

Ah right (hope you didn't think that was an insult to your intelligence, so many customers still think they have to open new accounts in a branch!), it's a pity you won't get the full 3.61%, but let's face the fact that, realistically, given the way rates have gone (although it's therefore important to maximise all the returns you get), it's not going to make an enormous amount of difference either way.
When you say she will try to 'sell [you] something else', please remember that any recommendations the advisor makes have to meet your banking needs - you can expect for her to take certain details from you that are mandatory, and although a full financial review is not essential, it would be nice to have an open mind for it if you have the time, given the way things are with everyone's finances at the moment!
Think I've rambled enough there, so I hope the appointment proves useful ma ñana! !

The rate is still showing as available at the moment.

If the 1% bonus has been withdrawn by the time of your appointment, you are under no obligation to accept the lower rate until you sign the application and hand over the subscription - a number of providers are offering better rates than 2.61% on fixed and variable-rate Cash ISAs.
  • My husband and I have an appointment tomorrow at our local Barclays branch because the manager told us it is no longer necessary to open (or have) a current account with Barclays. However, as the Golden ISA does not allow transfers and we can only invest this year's ISA allowance, can I also open another cash ISA (with Marks & Spencer for example) to transfer all past ISAs for a better rate?

ISA transfers do not constitute 'opening' a new Cash ISA - just complete the ISA transfer form of whichever provider you decide to use.

I opened the Barclays Golden ISA first thing this morning online when their website showed the rate of 3.61. I've just seen they have dropped it and am getting nowhere with complaining to them that their website showed the higher rate this morning when I opened it. I don't want this new rate so do I have to open another ISA elsewhere and then transfer the money out rather than close it?
