Tiscali... Be careful when asking for a MAC number

I was with Tiscali for many years and decided to leave after months of trying to sort out an old problem.

I looked round and found what I believe to be the best deal for me in my area, so at the end of January I phoned Ticali for my MAC number.
I was told it needed to be refered to a different department and would be sent to me by text and e-mail within 5 days, I voiced my concern as I have never yet recieved a completed follow up call from the company in many years. I was polite and the person on the other end reasured me.

I did recieve my MAC number by e-mail but only because I happened to be online at 8am the next morning as the person I spoke to isssued my MAC number then closed my account. I was without e-mail instantly and couldn't log in to see bills or anything, and my whole internet connection stopped the following day.

It took over a month for my new supplier to take over the line rental, phone calls and then to set up the internet connection which is way fasted than it ever was with Tiscali, yet all the equipment is the same as it was before (BT's).

Not having access to the internet & our e-mails has cost us money, the worst is I don't know where I stand.

So take care & find out how long any new company may take to set you up, I hope it never happenes to you.

Just don't say cancel - if you say that, then they may close the whole thing... anything is faster than Tiscali - they're cheap for a reason (and cannot even sell themselves)!

You should complain to Tiscali and ask for compensation for breach of contract/loss of service. A MAC request is not a notice of termination, it is (if you like) only an option to quit, which expires after 30days.
As long as you didn't say something like 'I am taking my account elsewhere and I want my MAC code', then you did not ask them to terminate the contract.
However in the light of this week's events, you may be glad that you got out earlier than you had planned to...

No wish to defend Tiscali, but I asked for my MAC last Monday 2nd March (they desperately tried to persuade me to stay), Received it by email on Tuesday 3rd, signed up to new provider same day and connected today 10th. Service remained working with Tiscali until today OK.
Now only problem is hoping Tiscali close the account and stop billing me.

From what you say, you haven't actually "migrated" to your new ISP (if your internet gets disconnected, which it sounds like yours did, then you would be treated like a brand new customer by the new ISP).

Make sure you aren't paying either cease charges to Tiscali or connection charges with your new ISP.

Telephoned Tiscali just after 9am this morning, I have just checked my emails and my MAC code is already there. I just wanted to let people see that tiscali arent all bad, its just we dont hear the good :D

now all I need to do is see which is the best Sky deal, do I go through Quidco, will I get the free vouchers ? hmmmm decisions, so come on help me out :D
I would like sky+ (2 mixes with no premium channels) , pay my telephone rental to sky instead of BT and have my broadband through Sky...........help, cos i still need to persuade hubby to get sky. Im currently paying £14.50 to BT and £14.67 to Tiscali if that helps. so what will be the best deal and where can i find it :o
Thanks in advance for any info/help you can give me :D

edit : Just took out the free sky+ box that Martin spoke about over on the shop but dont drop board, set up for £30 and £50 free M&S vouchers. £27.50 month.

I too requested (by email) and received my Mac code today from Tiscali within an hour. Just have to decide what to do with it now!

lilgray - what i did was login to my account area on tiscali's website and then clicked on broadband help and submitted an email form selecting 'MAC' from the subject headings dropdown. As I say, I received my code within the hour, so no complaints on that score.

    Hope that helps,
