Except it doesn't stop fraud, it just encourages it through other channels. Think logically: if we lost significant amounts through fraud, we would change policy.Do you not have something like our system, where we can pull up an image of a customer's signature on screen and compare it to what was signed in front of us?
Yes, we do. However, in this case, if they have access to the customer's entire wallet - including cards and driving license - they'd have adequate time to practice. What would William Shatner do?0 -
And yes we do have a system whereby we can view customers signatures it is called 'Signature Rules System', however on older accounts signatures seem to be non existent, so again this rules out this option...
Then you need to positively ID these customers otherwise and then get them to complete an SRS-08.

I assume this is only visa UK as when I went to Spain every retailer asked for photo ID with a credit card purchase (I was using a nationwide visa), even when it was only shampoo lolBarclaysManager wrote: »Barclays aside, the Visa rules say that you cannot make presenting ID a condition of accepting one of their cards.Kavanne

No, this is Visa worldwide. The only time a merchant should require ID is when a card is unsigned. They should then insist the card be signed in their presence and that it matches the ID presented.
As for writing "See ID" or similar, Visa says:“See ID” or “Ask for ID” is not a valid substitute for a signature . The customer must sign the card in your presence.
As for requesting cardholder ID:[M]erchants cannot make an ID a condition of acceptance. Therefore, merchants cannot refuse to complete a purchase transaction because a cardholder refuses to provide ID. Visa believes merchants should not ask for ID as part of their regular card acceptance procedures. What would William Shatner do?0 -
Weird, seemed very standard in barcelona for everyone....Kavanne

Standard all over Spain. No photo ID, no credit card accepted. It isn't everywhere, but any big store or supermarket will require it. Combat fraud at the coal front, I've never had a problem with it.
Mind you trying to explain to them about my Chip & Signature cards is fun

Visa insist the merchant must get me to sign my card? If that is the case, then it is surely time that some of you bank workers questioned the rules instead of blindly applying rubbish legislation, probably established back before chip and pin. The original post was about a situation that could not arise if the card was un-signed!
And if visa say a merchant cannot make proper id a condition of acceptance, then let VISA take responsibility for a duff transaction!0 -
I don't use a written signature with my Chip & Signature Cards and this is with the full knowledge of Barclaycard, just in case a retailer ever questions the system.
I use this system (BBC VIDEO)0 -
Hi James. Thanks for the link but have you actually tried it out?
Years ago I had an RBS credit card with my photo on it. Pity that one died a death.0 -

Yes hundreds of face-to-face transactions at all sorts of retailers, (just about evey High St name) restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions in the UK. Plus several European countries.0
