which recipe are you trying? they are both from posts a long time ago and just checking that thread and so far, no other posts that there is anything wrong with the recipe (qtys etc) so I've no idea why yours turned out like that. I used to make it when my kids were young, similar recipe to the first one I linked to and I never had any problems with it. maybe you could try again and double check quantities? :)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

i have just tried that recipe and it was an unmitigated disaster. i have no idea what i am doing wrong but it just turns out like a tasteless sponge.

    anybody any ideas?

The recipes with egg in them didn't seem to work for me either. I have tried the one in the book mentioned at the end of the school days recipes thread and that really was like concrete!

    Try this link http://uktv.co.uk/Food/Thread/threadID/36801/

It has some other ones to try.

make it with plain flour (as the recipe says) and it shouldn't rise ;)
  • i wasnt actually being thick!!!

it clearly says on a few of the recipes to use half plain and half self raising. i did think it a bit odd at the time.

not to worry, ill try again

I've always been succesful with a shortbread recipe (the ones with semolina in are good) and substitute 1oz of flour with 1oz of cocoa.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • Hi CousCous

I was given this Chocolate Crunch Recipe over 20 years ago by my dinner lady and its exactly like the one I used to remember.

    300g marg
300g granulated sugar (no need to use castor)
    1 egg
    1 teaspoon vanilla essence
    35g cocoa
    400g plain flour

Cream marg and sugar together. Add the egg and vanilla essence. Fold in the cocoa and plain flour.
Put the mixture into a shallow tin, press down and sprinkle sugar on the top.
Bake in a warm oven at 160c for approx 1 hour.
Once removed then cut into squares.

This does make quite alot so you may want to half the amount

    Enjoy!!

The best I have managed is mixing cornflakes into melted chocolate and leaving it to set again. I would love the recipe too.
