Probably room to grow a few hundred to seedling stage, then I'll keep a dozen or so. But I'd expect maybe 3 years life for the stored seeds so wont grow them all at once.0 -

Hmm, point of debate...I'm contesting our bill atm....:) There are a few private companies and at least one county brand of Wildlife Trust does them: I'd start with your counties wildlife trust who will probably be able to direct you to the nearest person.
Bear in mind they are advocates for the bats. Our surveyor wanted us not only not to proceed with our works (which we only plan to do at the right time of year and having provided alternative accomodation for the bats) but to heat and /or dehumidefy the attic for them, and not to put insulation up there, so they got some of our heat.0 -

The tops are all white with snow & it's hailing - sounds like ball bearings hitting the roof; like some form of evil torture.
Sorry to hear of your illness rhiwfield - take it easy in your house.
Dave - pony shoes down the back of radiators - must be like the wall of death in your house?
Went to Inverness today & the charity shops were not rewarding....disappointingly so.
B&Q have insulation for £3 @ roll which is blubbery cheap - all stacked up in the entrance - OH asked if it was a sale, was told it's that price for the forseeable - which is good as the car was stacked already.
Blubbery cold out there tonight.
Tried to buy an extension lead in B & Q - the price made us wince & we had to retreat gracefully - must google Screwfix & others. Would be good to get some lights up in the house so we can crack on after dark.0 -

I'll PM you...but need to find and check the bill first, a few hundred. It invloves more than one visit because they have to do a bat survey, and ours came on a rainy day so wanted to come back in dry weather, charging travelling and petrol both times but like to suss the joint first. In all honesty, I think that its a bit of a swizz for people with degrees not unlike mine to stay inwork in many (but not all) cases. There is no question of us not fitting in with, killing or not providing alternatives for our bats but they are very inflexible..the wildlife people rather than the bats! I pointed out without the work none of us will have a homeouse ...the bats' roof ain't safe unless the house is!, but the bat guy didn't get it
FWIW, they reckoned ours only moved in with us too.Wish we weren't on a list!

weather has turned here again. I pulled the courgettes out today, hit that time of year where I never want to eat another. We have about a dozen marrows too.
And brought the pumpkin in, in the nick of time I think, I think the heavens will open tonight.
It ripened well out there, and looks gorgeous. Its one of those that looks better than it will taste, so ...I might just put it in the window till hallowe'en.

Lotus-eater wrote: »Cheers for the pm, I'll all for wildlife conservation, but not when it goes against common sense.
the difficulty is that when it becomes so crazy then wildlife suffers because people have to go ahead on their own, and they rarely consider wildlife needs. Like you, we want to do well for wildlife...but we also have to move ahead here. Phase one and two at least do not touch the loft space at all (but for putting insulation in) and the rest of the work we will have to do under licence and at the right time, which is what we want to do anyway.0 -
hi all... ive been to london today, drove up to twickenham ,parked there then hopped on the train. went to check on my friends apartment in shaftsbury av. then went to the british museum ! i just loooved the egyptian rooms. those mummies are amazing..im a bit morbid like that ! i prefer the raw art of the egyptians as opposed to the greeks whos art etc was far more precise to me. drove home and just collapsed on the sofa ! 2 cups of tea and a slab of choc and im starting to feel human...i appreciate my QUIET surroundings after trips to the "smoke"....
i think i have bats under the tiles on the side of my house ? from the 1st floor to the eaves i have tiles and im always seeing bats flit past but never see where they come from/go to ? definately NOT in my roof cos iv looked. i love bats. they like all the insects that my verandah lights atract at night. its dodge city sometimes...
my friend has a nursey of bats in the floor of her balcony each year. [balcony is like 100ft x12ft] when you walk on the huge verandah on ground level underneath you can see where they go in and lots of mice size poops on the ground !0
