Speaking as one with two septic tanks in the garden, under 25m from the back door, I'm not sure I agree with this, but hey ho, there are always carbon filters for the vent pipes.

I know but the reality is that septic tanks routinely smell far worse than dry composting loos, as long as the dry composting loo is kept dry.

It is the mixing of poo and wet stuff that makes things stinky.
I think my very weak stomach stems from the many a year going to bike rallies every weekend, and seeing and smelling the portaloos

    Foul arn't they?

One group I was with used to use a bucket loo with a basic seat. When it was full we buried it. It never stank like a portaloo. Mind you the enclosure was a tent, with beautiful views if you could leave the zip down a bit.

I have a septic tank, I'd go for a compost toilet any day in preference.

Just haven't really got the space to compost the humanure tbh.

CTC.... just a thought...if you do "down size" your business ,could you [if/when you have more time] at least compensate with a down in customers by having a one day finish "bay day "....?? then you can use that ONE day to photo, load and pack all and wait till following weeks "day" to post etc when EVERYTHING IS SOLD...:D just a thought...

i went to see a carboot sale this morning at romsey...it was ok but i think im getting snobby as in my opinion it was all TAT !! [even for me :p]

i visited my old lady yesterday..she is having to get her leg cleaned and dressed every other day as she snicked the back of her calf when in the hospital and guess what...yep its got nasty infection...i just hope its not that mrsi [or whatever its called ??] .she cant have the pacemaker till its clear !!

iv been helping look after a poorly friends animals too so im hoping to have a ME day tomorow....

i "inherited" another bald, pecked hen on thursday so my "greenhouse" chooks are growing in numbers and oddities !!:rotfl: im going to remove a panel and build an outside run for them otherwise it will end up looking like a high rise in hackney soon :D

iv got posts and wire ready to resite the other hens so i can resite my babies [who are BIG now !]...BLUE my eagle owl just sits watching in his aviary nonchallently waiting to see who his neighbours are going to be next... he abutts the chooks at the mo,they sit side by side with just wire between quite happily...

seems theres so much to do and not enough time... i did mow the lawn yesterday ! iv still got tomatoes growing well [neglected outside my gate ??] my dahlias are huge ! my hanging baskets are thriving and things are flowering again when i thought they'de finished,[i had deadheaded tho]

im off to my mates flat in shaftsbury avenue london next month..taking my mum and as a surprise for her ,taking in a show...priscilla queen of the desert one as its opp apartment. just got to fix a time when im totally free:o

Slowly dismantling my business too,:( but nothing is wasted, so all the compost will end up doing good somewhere else.

We took a trip over to Hatherleigh this morning, as there was a rare breed poultry sale on and we wanted to check out prices. DW checks out the sellers too, then if she likes their birds, she has a chat, gets a phone number etc. ;)

There was nothing that special in our line today, but we have the details of one guy from the previous auction. He was buying to sell on, because he couldn't meet demand from his own stock. DW found out that he specialises in one or two breeds she wants. "But I don't sell the best ones here," he told her. "I've just come here to buy some average ones cheap!"

The price today seemed to average about £10-11 for POL pullets.

All this talk of compost - harvested most of the winter squash, T&M Sunshine F1, a kind of kabocha squash that had been growing in the compost heaps made up of rotted chicken manure, shavings and the free municipal stuff. Averaged about 6 squash per plant, weight av 1.5kg, pretty happy with that :) But the bonus is that the stuff thats left looks so rich and crumbly.

Ebay ticking along, sold the 1825 painting and silk last week, and moving the less valuable prints now, 2 last night and a nice silver souvenir spoon will finish shortly. The low value stuff normally goes to car boot, but sometimes sell heavy items there too, 3 Delft chargers last month. Missed an auction today as our friends from the heritage centre cut the new SSSI :T field. Great people!! So will car boot tomorrow and hay rake the cut acre nx weekend.

Spent morning making a wooden cover for the garage tap, if we do have a bad winter dont want to risk a burst. And I'm considering snow tyres on one car just in case.

Alfie, you do know you do too much!! Hope the old lady recovers soon from the infection.
  • Thats how i started my business Alfie was selling on ebay, but now havent got time to spit...lol..

The more i have been thinking about it, and talking to hubby ( who allways agrees with me anyway maybe for a quieter life...lol...) i think downsizing the business is a good thing.. i have done some rough figures... and i could save my self approx £1200 a week in running costs etc... so weighing up the business lost by moving and down sizing... it would still be viable business. and yes Alfie i can go back to ebaying one day a week...:D

Weather is a horrible heavy mist type rain now....

There was a rare breed sale today in Ffairfach, but i forgot all about it, maybe a good thing otherwise i would have def come back with some sort of live stock or more rubbish to add to my collection of !!!!:rotfl:

We have a septic tank now but we need to do a reed bed.

Alfie - you do too much.

rhiwfield - I'm enjoying the ebaying, but not selling expensive things.

CTC - I was glad when I gave over my shop, many moons ago - it was too tying & too much of handing money over to others - insurance, rent, phone, rates etc.

I'm laid up with a stomache bug & feel as weak as a kitten so I've lolled all day today. Supposed to have friends coming tomorrow but I think I'll put them off as I feel infectious!

Hope your stomach is a bit better for a night's sleep choille. :)

I'm not sure about mine this morning!:( We had an African evening in the village, and the food was so tempting I over-indulged. :o One of the more interesting items was goat, which was certainly better than I anticipated, but there were many exciting things to try, many of them vegetable based, which I'd like to know more about.

People's costumes were amazing too. I thought I was daring wearing a two piece linen outfit, with embroidered details on the neck and hems, but I turned out to be one of the more conservatively attired!
