the main thing are your apples ok?:D

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Driver was trapped between fence/ground/lorry when lorry tipped over unloading building materials. He was incredibly luckyto escape serious injury, but was taken to hospital anyway. Nobody else hurt at all.

Got to admit a tiny, momentary pang when the building workers rocked out one of the wire support posts to make more room for the driver but fencing is easy enough to replace.

These apples are having a tough time, earlier this year Western Power line engineers managed to break off several fruiting spurs, and we've lost a few more now. Winston may end up being a tip bearer yet.

Davesnave, sorry about hen, as you say it'll have to wait til Monday now. Noted already you're taking quarantine precautions.

Hmmm, helicopter has just taken off, police and ambulance gone, but incident team still here.

And I didnt even want a lorry on top of my espaliered apples :(

Just very thankful that the guy trapped underneath, and now released, was almost unhurt!!

Oh my, I hope everyone is ok.

Dave: we are treating our new flock for mycoplasma at the moment (as well as blasted mites/lice and scaley leg mites, thankfully no red mite though) (these are new chickens before I get jumped on for animal cruelty and came to me like this). Your breeder was not in North Devon by any chance?

Sorry went off on a tangent there, what I was going to say was, we are treating for mycoplasma atm and have also got the vermin problems mentioned above and we have lost 2 so far, our vet thinks its down to move stress, as well as fighting all these common problems at once and they were just the weaker ones. Fingers crossed you lose no more and its nothing more serious than what you can see.

Our source isn't in North Devon. I won't say exactly where they are on here, but you can PM if you want to know. ;)

Sad but interesting that you've had two die with mycoplasma & lice. Were they constantly sneezing? Did you see bubbles in their eyes & did they sneeze blood? I know the trigger can be the stress of moving them, but they must be predisposed first.

This chicken keeping is harder than I thought! :o

Yes, rhiwfield, there are footbaths at both locations and DW is now changing clothes when moving from one pen to the other. What a palaver! :(

Can't beat a lorry in the garden, though. That's a definite first on here! :D

They were the worst affected, along with a third but I think she is coming out the other end now. All of them had the "gurgling" to some extent, and mucus ranged from hardly any to (in the case of the worst 3) mucus around eyes and mouth, no blood though thankfully but they had alot of head shaking a bit like we do when we are trying to unblock our ears. Sneezing was quite regular yes, I think we were lucky only 2 have died tbh (again I will state they came to me in such bad condition). I know its not my original flock that has caused this as like you I am anal about my quarantine, being a reptile keeper (explains the user name) I have to be as a virus can wipe out all of them if quarantine and cross contamination routine is bad and it rubs off on my other animals.

How is the house going choille?

Starting to believe that we will one day become grown ups & live in an actual house. Each Saturday we've had 4 joiners here - boy do they work. I will update my blog with photos soon.
Hope your arm is getting easier & the bees are good.

    Welcome all newbies.
Rhiwfield that's incredible - hope everyone is unharmed & the damage can be put right quickly & at an insurance co expense & not your own.

Ill hens - had one die on us this morning - not unexpected as she aint been good for a while & was giving her the benefit of the doubt put she keeled over this morning.
Scaly leg mite is proving hard to get rid of - spray legs, clean & disenfect the house - every 5 days but still not got rid of it - hope it doesn't go into the chicks. Must be the weather too - ideal conditions - humid.
Big Lavender Orp is rattling - cold? No mucus, but I hope it's only a cold.
We are so far away from a vet & when we took the wee buff orp we were not impressed and we ended up having to dispatch her.(Using the royal 'we' there - Mr Choille is the dispatcher these days) I don't think the vets are used to dealing with poultry here. £25 @ visit or to get a dose of anti-biotics!
Wonder if it's poss to get anti-biotics off the internet?

I'm off to a crofting federation talk on alternative energy tomorrow in Strathpeffer - so that'll be interesting as the stuff - talks they arrange are always very good.
It's thick with midgies out - could cut them with a knife - bahhhhhhhh. Midgie machine broken, again! And the clegs are back......
The gardens totally neglected this year & looks a right mess, but I did pick rasps last night & have had a good crop of blackcurrants so not all is lost. The tatties look good too.

I know it's not the answer but I use cider vinegar in the water for a week if hens are unwell as a boost - 2%.

hey Choille I tried to get Tylan/Baytril over the internet for ours with no luck, I had to go to a chicken quack, if you do mange to find somewhere online please could you PM me the details.

Sorry to hear about your Chook and i hope the other is going to be ok. Scaly leg mite is a nightmare huh, we have opted for Ivomec along with vasaline every 3 days (nightmare on 14 chickens) and deep cleaning out the chook houses every saturday (guess what I am doing tomorrow?). How are you tackling it? if you have a better way I might borrow your idea

I'm using a spray specially for leg mite that I got off the internet, but I was told vaseline or germoline is good - creates a barrier - spray & then smear with vaseline/germaline. The houses are all hand made wood ones & I've been using a jeyes fluid spray that is for kids outdoor play equipment............

The yanks can get Tylan/Baytril from the Internet, but the regs in the UK forbid sales of antibiotics without prescription.

We had spare Tylan left over from dosing a hen with tummy trouble, so we were using that before the vet prescribed it. Luckily, our vet's a chicken freak, so the vitamin injections and Tylan came to £1 and she only charged for examining 1.5 hens "because they are small." :)

It's a good thing to do routinely anyway. I think DW does that one week in four. They make the real stuff near here and our horsey neighbour buys in bulk, so we can get it from her. She gives it to the horses, the chickens, the dogs and herself.

Considering she's at the end of her 70s and was outside last night at 10pm, still wrapping bales, it must be doing something! :)
