Anyone out there had rain in the last 6 weeks?

Just a couple of very brief showers. Our ground is cracked and rock hard. I'm grateful for our own ''reservoir'' of water as I'm having to water a fair bit. Any light showers coming on the south breeze get dumped on the big hill I look out on, leaving us dry or as good as.

Snap, except the 'big hill' in our case is Dartmoor! Our springs are all but dried-up here, which is ridiculously early.

Our friend has hatched a total of 4 A'lorp chicks, which is good news, as she and our other contact in the area might be able to breed more at a future date. Definite gap in the market, or are we missing something?

Like you Lir, a bit of light rain yesterday, not enough to do more than wet the soil surface. Try to get most things done early morning, then take it easy during the heat of the day. Reminding myself that its still April!

Got a couple of days of free water left, then I'll have to use mains water :(

wow, sound like brilliant back garden birds....364 eggs a year!

FWIW, I met someone who reckons he can sell his rare breeds... for £100-200 a bird. I almost fainted. I've bought some of the ones he talks about in my normal price range of £15 - £40 for adult show birds. I think sometimes people lose the plot choosing birds :o I think the stock I've bought in at £40 are hugely dear, but I'll pay in for good healthy and correct stock to breed from every now and then.

Yes, that is a lot! I suppose when they are fully grown it's easier to see what you've got. One of our Silver Dorkings isn't entirely true to type, for example, but at the age they were when purchased, the price of £9 each was right.

Don't think we'll go big time with the eggs, as we live in such a cheap egg area. That means we might get into breeding....;)

You'd be good at it: your attention to detail means you'd get it right.

For me, there is no desire to breed for income. None at all. I just like to know, roughly, where things will end up and that I haven't bred to sell to an unknowledgable fashion home....and don't trust my people radar from gate sales. For friends/people I know I've had time to think about saying I have some spare or ...not. :)

If you go into rare breeds breeding it probably is worth carting some around to shows, both for interest and developing an eye of what to look for...again, something with your horticulturists' eyes you and your DW would probably be excellent at, but also for the ''wins''. Its also generally a cheaper way to get a ticket to a county show :rotfl: or used to be...dunno what entries are in this decade!

    evening all.
i went to a 60's party last night [friends friends 40th birthday] it was so bad it was brilliant.... a friend and i went , sat in the corner like wallflowers and generally had a laugh at the set up...:D:D the "dj" was of pontins origin me thinks [not even butlins standard !!] he looked like the grim reaper stood there just putting on 60s/70s music, we couldnt figure out how his CDs "jumped" every time anyone went near to him ?? also he kept doing "meddlies" so as those willing to dance got into thier stride, the music changed ! we were wetting ourselves......:rotfl:
then on came the food ....egg sarnies, cheese and cress sarnies, paste sarnies and anything else you can imagine in ....a sarnie... oh and cold soggy breaded scampi ?? tomatoes?? [no dips] ....and so on !:o
it was not what you would call a boisterous affair...but the highlight for us 2 girlies was the LOO [only one there].... it vibrated and warbled to the base of the music ...the base was well below decks so to speak ! so as you are sat the seat and lid are making allsorts of weird warbling/vibrating noises:rotfl: we had a few drinks [exceedingly cheap so took advantage:D] so we ended up having a john travolta bop and livened up the place in the last half hour....
needless to say after the alcohol wore off i was walking like an egg bound duck:rotfl:

today i went to see an old boy who has the most amazing collection of old farming memorabilia..... hes down sizing...it was like 4 sheds of a museum....:T needless to say iv bought some of it....:o
if anyone is after real old things ie a big chaf machine, lots of old grinders etc, allsorts of tools, an old parafin incubater [big!] hundreds of things ...including 12ft church pews !! let me know... hes not selling to general public but hes very cheap on prices, as long as it goes to a good home:)
    im going back wednesday.........:p

anyway im just taking back BIG dog i look after for hols...
its been 24 degrees here and not a drop of rain, the roads are packed and the grockles are out in force....

Do you mean a chaff cutter? Does it work? I might be interested if so (and if I can get it here!)
