We have lots of space that isn't being used, we have a comfortably sized garden but I just feel we are not using it to it's full advantage. The first year here we started small and only had a few bits and pieces planted and last year I had all my seedlings up and running in the greenhouse when I took not well and sadly the seedlings and the garden went to ruin. it was so hard to watch all our good work go to waste but there was nothing that could be done.

When we moved in we were thinking about a 5 year plan for the garden where we would expand our growing every year till the garden was at full capacity so we wouldn't take on too much too soon.

Ah I see. :) Not sure what to suggest.. I've grown things in flower beds with flowers, and some work for me some don't. I'd never bother putting artichokes in the veg space again, we eat few enough for a couple in the border to produce enough for several starters each year. Lettuces worked well. Peppers and aubergines didn't. I don't think they got enough light. Maybe some of your stuff can creep out without you technically enlarging the veg growing space?

I really want to have a garden with loads of flowers for the insects and veggies for me! I have been reading the Alys Fowler books, that I know some people are not huge fans of, but the style of gardening really appeals to me. I have a few raised beds that I will use as I have before but in the beds I think I will try and do a different way using a mix of different plants.

Hi Rummer - You should maybe try & get a book on companion planting where you plant things next to plants that are good for each other/repel pests and such.

I'm finding it hard to keep up with the thread at the moment.

Thank you for that Choille does anyone know of a good companion planting book? Did you get your security settings changed?

We evolved through natural selection which creates far from perfect creatures

who decides who is "far from perfect"?? compared to what ?? i find that quote quite ambiguous. perhaps i shouldnt rise to "the bait"....

There is not. and was never any intention of `bait` here. I could go on about my personal experience of children dying before their parents, but I think that`s facile

To the lady who was questioning whether she should try for a child again because she was in her own words `barren`, and thinking that was `natures way`, I posed the possibility that we all all imperfect and therefore shoudlnt feel guilty for our imperfections, WHICH WE ALL SHARE.

I make no apology for my views. Others can judge whether I was in solidarity with this this lady or not.

I have strong views, I do not deny this, with all my heart I care for humanity, I am a humanist. But if I am critical of anyones view it is not a personal attack, how could it be, I do not know them?

I have many friends whom I disagree with strongly and it doesnt stop us being friends.

I won`t post any more on this issue because is is about a womans loss, I do not wish to claim the moral high ground, anyone who shares this view I believe is respectful.

Only you can delete your posts. I've just deleted some of the stuff I wrote relating to a public nuisance a few days ago, which could be prejudicial in the wrong hands....

"Man, this thread is gettin kinda heavy!" as I would have said in my pretentious era, back in 1968. :o

On the subject of children; I've said before somewhere that we only ever have them on loan. Many people have them for the wrong reasons, thinking that they can keep them fenced-in, but they always get away in the end. I solved this problem by borrowing other people's, an academic year at a time, and you can take it from me, without any disrespect to my own kids, that they were just as good.....well, most of 'em! :rotfl:

Yesterday was something else. I was outside working in my shirtsleeves, the back door was wide open, Mr Dog's dogs were silent and MiL even cancelled her visit.....:p What's more, with time to think, I decided I could probably mend the old polytunnel and make it work for those few crucial months until the new one can go up.

Choille, I wouldn't worry unduly about your blog, but if you do decide to go private, please PM me a pass. I love seeing your photos, even if I don't comment! :A
  • flip Davesnave, I dont know waht you sounded more excited about, the shortsleeves the dogs not barking, or your MIL not visting:rotfl: but i can guess which one brought a smile to your face.....lol..

Well back to work today...:( and i am like that and its my own business...lol..

Put a few bits on ebay and i have a few watchers allready... so might list a few more things while i am in work...lol..

edit..... I'm with Davesnave I would love to be allowed to read your blog...so if you do go private is it possible to consider me to be allowed to read it please
