Funny that it was a stockman who saw the happiness in the cows.
While I believe that milk is better from cows that move around and eat proper grass, I also agree with the stockman that cows can be perfectly happy in their life inside a mega dairy.

this is a tricky one ! i dont agree that cows should be in a mega dairy but i also dont agree on the odd occasion that "outdoor" cows live in filth, mud and poor conditions...[a recent case near me has seen untold neglect of livestock, gaining a ban from keeping, which they are appealing !!??]
the lack of grazing and the rise in demand has brought about this conflict.. we live in a very demanding society and it is frightening the speed that greed is taking a hold... minimum input for maximum gain...
i truly believe that one day soon all our technology is going to backfire drastically on us and hopefully the greedy ones will be brought down to earth and those that use /have used the traditional methods will survive and flourish...

hows that for a "soap box "....!!!

I dont know how you measure a cows happiness, barring extracting brain fluids and testing neurotransmitter levels. I would hazard that a stressed animal produces far less milk, which would suggest the mega farms would be designed so that cows felt as comfortable as possible.

    im sorry but this comment.....
you can permenantly hammer a car at 90mph, it will do it but it will be SHORT LIVED compared to a carefully driven one...
these cows become machines, they dont know how to express natural behaviour... less milk than what ? the cow next door?
we should not be proud of this. its like communism !!

Our neighbour on the far boundary of the land here has been allowing his dogs to bark again recently, sometimes all day. Last Sunday I could hear they were in their kennel and cage run in sub-zero temperatures from dawn to dusk.

i would be tempted to report them, not for the barking but the sub temperatures and conditions they are being kept.... the powers that be have more clout laws now as to the "conditions" and general welfare of animals as apposed to just cruelty. its not healthy for dogs to be barking for long periods....
i know its not nice to report anyone but it would maybe be just a word in thier ear to put things right ??

Most people who use kennels and run will have a pig lamp in the kennel. I have no guilt about doing it in the right circumstances. TBH I think its probably more interesting for a dog than being shut in a kitchen with no view stimulation all day if its owners work, rather a run where they can widdle, bird watch, wrestle a toy....but not under these circumstances!

The barking however is a problem. I feel very guilty if ours bark if someone comes to the house and I'm in the field/yard and it can take me 10-15 mins to get back. I heard dogs where we used to live from over a mile away and I here our neighbours here from about 1/2 a mile away. I can imagine how annoying it is to ..well almost everyone!

I have to say our food choices are dependent on our income which has fluctuated greatly over the last couple of years. I refuse to eat meat that has come from animals that have not enjoyed as natural a life as possible so we altered our diet and started to eat mainly vegetarian meals with the occasional piece of nice meat. Lack of cash and the desire to eat local fresh food also encouraged us to grow our own. Over the years I have tried to support local businesses but it can be hard when you are working late and they are closed when you are ready to shop.
    well said...
you have to cut your cloth etc...
how the hell did so many people survive rationing after the war ? by micro wave meals? by burger monopolised outlets? no by doing what they could with what they had....
im fed up hearing sob stories about not having enough when you see they managed to buy a wide screen tv and the latest games console ?? the genuine less well off [not through sitting on butt waiting for handouts] have my sympathy but they also do thier best...
its long been proved one can eat well and more healthily on a lot of foods that do not cost a fortune.

we had mute dogs when I was younger. from that generation the one who lived the longest one day came into the living room...he was really ancient by then....and he looked round at all of us and started to wobble and shake and stamp his legs. Then he looked at us again and made a little squeak, wagged his tail and left the room. It was quite hilarious. He was about a hand bigger than a shetland we hand at the time, so this tiny noise being the crescendo of his lifetime's conversation was quite something.

    Naw - Santa's just landed.

It's cold out there but.......there's ice sliding off the shed roof.

No, it's sliding off the caravan roof coz of the heat in here, but it isn't as cold, still frozen but cloudy. I think it's gonna snow.
