Alfie - you're very kind. We are okay, I'm just fed up with taking the water out of the burn & slithering up to the sheep, filling buckets for our own use & slithering down to the hens.
We have enough in & we won't starve - neither will the animals it's just.......Baltic.....BALTIC.......0 -
Right - Off to bed now - where's my flannalette salopettes?0

Hope you have a good sleep xTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Choille, farmhouse near us on south river terrace of Thaw valley doesnt get sun for 2 months due to hill to the south. I've not missed finding out what its like
This morning seems a bit warmer (well less cold) o/n temps down to -5C but prob about -1 now. Was able to get the car up the hill to the house and did some shopping...getting manic even in Lidl. Best seller was 10kg bags of cat litter for the ice. And postie delivered for first time in 6 days
What gets me is that we've had a month of exceptionallly cold weather and we've not even got to the coldest months. Will be time to restock on essentials just in case.0 -
Choille, I think one thing that helps a bit at this time of year (and we're past the Solstice!) is to start planning for the year ahead. We might not be able to do anything outside, but careful thought put into things now, may save effort later.
As we're out of penalty-free cash, we've been thinking about how to sell our old nursery garden, so DW had preliminary talks with an agent last week. Our best bet is probably still to sell it to the people whose tiny yards back onto it, but we are not restricted in any way. Two of the houses have no rear access at all, so would benefit greatly, but what is a rear entrance (pedestrian) worth on a £300k house? The agent has his view, but I'd be happy to hear others' thoughts..
Our neighbour on the far boundary of the land here has been allowing his dogs to bark again recently, sometimes all day. It isn't a problem so much in summer, because the dogs go out working and get exercise, but with the east winds at present, and no leaves to deaden the sound, we've noticed it.

Funny that it was a stockman who saw the happiness in the cows.
While I believe that milk is better from cows that move around and eat proper grass, I also agree with the stockman that cows can be perfectly happy in their life inside a mega dairy.
It's our privilege to look after the animals that we totally control, like all farm animals. We control every bit of their lives. If a dog doesn't get enough exercise the owner is told they are doing wrong. But a cow is hidden away and if it doesn't get enough exercise, we like it because it gives us cheaper milk.
Just as some children would be happy with a couple of rooms with food and computer games if that is all they knew, cows can be happy in the same kind of environment. And it's our job to not let that happen.
Ours, as in the public and we do that, by buying the right kinds of milk I think. While there is a market for cheap mass produced, animal abusing products, there will be people ready to produce them.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Davesnave I like your style:D:rotfl: now if you get a group of guniea fowl sp? they make a hell of a racket, during the day anyway.... they get right on my nerves in the farm auctions, as they are quite ear peircing.....I am sure Mr Dog would have hos own thoughts on them:rotfl:

I could sen you some warm coats, jumpers, socks, gloves, hats, etc
Well i bought one of hubby's christmas pressies last yesturday, and had to give it to him last night...
I bought him a tortoise, its funny as hell, we have had experience with them before, plus we got all the equipment from when we had quite a few reptiles etc...
Our vet is brilliant he is a reptile specialist, and his main thing is tortoises, so in the new year we will go and register it there, as once its a certain size its got to be micro-chipped...it didnt have munch through its food last night....lol... so have settled in very well,
Just thinking of a name for it now....
Went to homebase yesturday, and bought a christmas tree with lights etc for only £3, bargin, at that price it wasnt worth the hassle of trying to get ours out from the loft..:rotfl:
