CTC, when things are looking bleak an opportunity sometimes beckons. Never lose the dream, or the heart to make a success of it :)

Having chased down lots of local history leads in the past a good route to establishing age is by reference to maps in the local studies section of the library, especially inclosure awards and tithe maps. Depending on where the property is that should get you back to 1800s. If you can identify it on the map, you can have fun by tracking down past occupants from census records.

For a peasants cottage (which I'm guessing it is) you may struggle to date it earlier.

Just curious, is it in Wales?

Crikey, I go out to enjoy the sun and you lot are all in here doing architecture....:rotfl:

The chimney breast is all stone with the exception of the bit that's been bricked-up on the left of it, at first floor level. Could that have been a second fireplace? I didn't think upstairs fireplaces were common on very early small cottages, but I believe the working people in the C19th would take the embers upstairs to the bedroom and put them in the fireplace there to take the chill off the room when they went to bed.

That's about the limit of my 'knowledge.' :o

Well, it's been a lovely day here and I've been back in shirtsleeves, finishing off the log shed roof, but now we'll pay for it with another hard frost. :(

As I can't think of much more to say, except 'Hang on in there, CTC!' I will leave you with a picture of the van when we got home last night. (Oh, and the bad news is that the orange boiler suit doesn't fit me. Thought I'd got a useful freebie there.:()

cooltrikerchick...my personal tip for a temporary uplift in mood?

You tube, the pointer sisters and ''Jump''. Throw yourself into it,jump to the beat trough the chorus EVERY time, without fail, jig along inbetween, and you can't help but feel better afterwards. and yes, when I'm able I do do this! In fact, DH and I just did, which is why I thought to pass it on to you. (I know have cramp in left calf and very sore knees and ankles and puffing a bit, but still makes me feel better...perhaps just because I can do it today!)

CoolTC - Hugs. Hope things get more hopeful. Fears about potential problems can be worse than the actualities. It's the worrying that's awful. Try & ration your worrying time if at all possible & don't do it before bedtime. All th ebest.

rhiwfield - put the other pheasant in the freezer - safest bet. He has the same views as me on 'game'. One of my brothers hangs pheasants until maggots drop out of their bums.... or so he says as he knows it makes me feel gippy.

When the shooters come up & stay - everything they eat seems to be 'high' - by 'high' I mean minging, off. I have worked in an estate house that houses the shooters & they must have cast iron guts. I like my meat fresh & cooked, they like it honking & raw. I have no respect for my betters..............
