CTC - that's a lot of money each week on feed. Do you have a lot of hens/chickens? Locusts & stick insects - do you have rats? Not vermin rats, pet ones?

Alfie - cute photies. What do people do with Shetlands apart from look at them & go ahhh? Are they able to drag things? There's some appeared on a little small holding we pass when going for our big shop. We call it the fuzzy felt farm as it's so perfect & in miniture - like the kids picture making thing I had as a child.

We have a pair of buzzards this year, they don't appear to be a problem, but when they go over the cockerel makes a real strange noise - warning his girlies that there's danger about. We also have a sparrow hawk - had two of those - which was odd, but ones gone now, haven't seen it for ages. It caught a blue tit in mid air almost in front of me at the start of the year It was incredible.

It was exceptionally cold yesterday. There is now a thaw on & the ground is lethal & we have a forecast of a load of snow & a freeze for later - great.
The burn is mainly iced over - as it did last year. Georgeous to look at but pretty hopeless.

Daves talk of hens roosting - two, a pair of my posh, buff Orpingtons spent the night out last night, were chuckling around this morning. So goodness knows where they spent the night but they are extremely lucky they weren't snaffled by the marten as he's leaving his spraints all over the place & has mangled yet another ( metal) peanut feeder which I only bought last week coz it looked really strong. Saying 'mangled' I don't know if it is - it's vanished!

Well - I suppose I'd better go & empty the car that's been left up at the roadside. Just grabbed what was necessary yesterday.
    Keep cosy all.

    .

They are stronger than there size suggests. They can drag, but better still, for their height, are great pack animals...you don't have to lift so high. They can pull at least double their weight and though I don't think they are ideal riding ponies for anyone, even tinies (they are so wide that children usually are forced into a poor riding position to try and get legs around them) they can carry a lot...8 or nine stone,so a slim adult could sit on one if they were so inclined. TBH, not my idea of fun! Mainly they are used for kids ponies or driving ponies.

hi, i am breaking them to drive...bearing in mind 3 adults are mine plus one foal [unexpected after buying mare!] and 3 i am just looking after for the winter for someone who lost thier grazing!=7 minis. BUT i cant promise the "3" wont end up being part of the gang !!??
i have 2 piebalds that have close markings so would like to drive as a pair. FLO the little skewbald has already been in a trap. just took to it like a duck to water, just have to polish the edges..... being on the forest is ideal for driving. the foal is like a naughty lab pup at the mo, into everything and bold as brass , will be probably unmanagable for life [can see it in his eyes!] they could pull an amazing weight actually [probably mathamatically low to the ground and built like bricks helps!]
RUBY my piebald cob foal is ,me thinks, going to be a whoppa....so ride and drive for her! plus id like to show in hand next year as long as she behaves! im not one of the "arty farty" showing brigade ...more MA LARKIN style..... raise a few eyebrows cos i dont wear the top fashion!!!!:rotfl: its the horse on show not me....

Hullo guys! I haven't anything to contribute (I'm still armchair searching on the internet) but I just popped in to see how you're all surviving the snow - very well from the looks of it. We've had at least 2 feet in Sheffield here and our van hasn't left the drive since Tuesday. The students were all panic buying beer in Tescos when I walked there on Wednesday :rotfl: I like to keep my larder well stocked so we're not starving yet.
  • sorry but i am having a really POO couple of days...

head in shed etc, so havent been to work...so sorry for not 'joining in' in the weather talk...

there is free listing on ebay this weekend ( cant use turbo lister etc)

CTC - Sorry to hear you're not having a good time of it- Take care & rest up.

I should try & list stuff on ebay - I have never done it & I should as I have a few things I could sell & It would suit me living here - in the middle of nowhere - to do it.

    All the best.

Love your fuzzy felt farm descriptor - I had one as a kid, and my girls did too. Must make sure that the Twins (first GrandKids) have access to one when they're big enuff.

We had a sparrowhawk take a finch/tit in the garden early this year when me and MiL were sitting out there. And a pigeon had a narrow escape on another occasion - hawk flew into the ground chasing it, was a bit stunned, which is why I got enuff time to see what it was. It's so long since we managed to watch the birds at the house. I've ordered a load of bird food, and we have some mixed seed too stored in the shed. Must get there and feed the birds!
