    I've been Money Tipped!
No progress outside at ll this weekend. Moved fields to our last ''virgin'' grass, that's it. :)

Well the gale have died away - thankfully.

I've been idle outdoor wise this week but today I have been doddling about. I've started to take down some of the whippy silver birch trees in the little wood down from the house site. I mean to have some runs made there for the hens. It will be pretty sheltered in there.

Some of the flagpole type trees I'm taking down are only a few inches in diameter - like one or two inches. There are quite a few. I've taken some down a few years back, but really I suppose I could take out 50% as I don't think these whippy ones are gonna do much apart from break in the gales to come. There is some holly coming up on the floor - which is nice & at the edge some re gen hazel - which is lovely to see. Does anyone know if I'm doing right?
I don't want to be doing owt detrimental.

hi, when i cleared my "wooded bit" i used all the whippy wood to create a fence by weaving it in and out of uprights... not a proffesional job but created a wind break and gave it a use.
i have just sat down after spending all day faffing around with horses!!
    first the "fosters" [3 minis] arrived to the field much to the horror of the TB [who, if he could have, hung his head and groaned "not more of the little blighters" !]he spent a while acting like a sheepdog and kept splitting them into 2 groups, his and NOT his girls. the sheep just stood to the side of the field watching it all , resembling a tennis match as 7 miniature shetlands and a thoroughbred do circuits around the field [actually resmbled the wild west!!}
the TB has a new rug on which will probably resemble a battle field of mud tomorrow!! he doesnt care so i dont know why i do ?
then i spent time with my new baby....my lovely 6 month old piebald filly [ i have that cat got cream smirk on my face!!].
shes a tad nervous but i managed to clean out her front feet with surprising ease ? she didnt know/seem to know what apple was? but was trying it. will need to find a healthy treat she likes to start work with her but shes stabled for now rather than lose her in 10 acres for the winter. i have to get her to WANT to come to me. but shes young, had not been handled at all so shes doing well. she is so pretty!
anyway sorry about that, i hope everyone is coping with the weather. its not raining as much here but it is cold !! sure its colder up north so cant complain....
    still no eggs!

Thanks for the kind comments on the garden.

Whilst a themed garden isnt for everyone, we enjoy the escapism it creates, and the challenges of growing the kind of plants that give the look we are after.

    Lets have some photos!

Took MiL (she's a good friend, not just MiL) to view house today and she was very interested.

Our plasterer was chuffed to spot a woodpecker in the garden we've been told.

Today saw 4 long tail tits in the magnolia outside the living room. We're really glad we went for wider bifold door space than the size of the old windows. It's about 2 foot wider, makes a helluva lotta difference to what you can see from the living room. :j

Harvested some Charlotte potatoes from spud grow bag thingies, still got more to come out. Better get on with that this week I guess.

We're in the throes of choosing internal stuff now, so garden will prob have to wait... I just wish I'd taken some of the roses to bring home with us. Maybe in the week?

No I couldn't weave these tress into fences - they're not supple enough. I don't think. I just don't want to make wind tunnels - but I don't suppose I've made any difference as they are such thin trees - even though they're about 6 metres tall. They've just been drawn to the light I think.
Some of them have been barked when the deer got in.

I have been planning what I am going to plant this year and I am going for an edible landscape type setup instead of planting in lines. I will still have my square foot beds for structured planting but I want my garden to be pretty and productive. I will be starting from scratch as a lot of my beds are empty so I will need to plant my seeds nice and early indoors, when should I start this year, is is about February time? I missed the boat last year and was late getting things in. I really want to get the most from my garden this year as last year was such a washout.

You can plant indoors in January - the seeds will come up when conditions are right for them.

I seemed to be late with everything last year - mind you it was a funny season. You put me to shame Rummer - you sound so organised.
